I had no idea this was such a large part of their GDP.

Why?

They have to kill these animals on the wildlife preserves.

but aren't the old and slow of the herd supposed to be killed by a predator? now what do they eat

Maybe eventually, but that isn't the main reason for hunting permits.

I believe the reason is because older males can kill cubs and younger males which retards the herd/pride's proliferation.

ETA: I also think they are more of a threat to humans when they get older, but I'm not positive.

There is a reason that the Blade Runner accidentally “retired” his GF. He thought someone was breaking into his house through the bathroom she was in.

Forgot about that guy. That was a sad story.

Let's just get it over with. Objective truths:

-Trophy hunting funds conservation efforts, is selective about animals harvested, benefits locals and the local economies, etc.

-Trophy hunters are often vanity-driven and lame as hell and deserve to be made fun of

Lions neither live in the jungle, nor do they sleep at night.

I think your beef is with The Tokens, my guy.

Having said that, poetic license is appropriate, because:

quote:

On the savannah, the wicked flat savannah,
The lion sleeps in the daytime
On the savannah, the quiet savannah,
The lion sleeps when it's bright – ho, ho!

...would have been unwieldy to sing.

I have no issue with hunting, as long as you're doing it for food. People that kill animals just for a trophy head are POS.

I’m a hunter myself but this ain’t correct in regards to some of these animals. And this to me isn’t hunting. The African bush elephant is endangered , lions are on the vulnerable list. There is a serious poaching problem in Africa which is leading to them being on these endangered lists. So these “hunting” trips are not about controlling the heard like we do with deer and other species that are in abundance. There just a way to make money off rich people.

South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment makes Bank off these hunters. And I'm sure it's only run by ethical conservationists.

Probably true in some circumstances. But I remember the outrage over the Texas guy that paid a bunch of money to shoot an endangered rhino. It turns out for that species of rhino when the dominant male bull gets older and loses his appeal to the ladies he has a "midlife crisis" and starts killing the other younger rhinos with his giant horn in a desperate attempt to maintain his spot on the breeding list. So the game wardens have to watch for this shakeup and kill the dominant male before he goes on a rampage against the other rhinos. Basic math - kill an old rhino to save several younger rhinos. And they figured as long as we're going to shoot this bull, we might as well let some Texan pay us $300k to do it.

I have no problem with that.

People have a hard time differentiating between permitted hunting and poaching.

It is yet another example of feelings and emotions governing critical thought and understanding.

ETA: Those are the same people who likely shite on the Robertsons for killing thousands of ducks a year. They have no idea that the duck population in their area has exploded since they acquired the land they hunt. Even with the numbers they've killed there are more ducks coming to that area than any other time that statistics have been recorded.
