Yes this is the adage
Basic snowboarding is harder. But getting to an advanced level is easier once you breakthrough.
Basic skiing is easier. But getting to an advanced level is a harder wall to breakthrough.
I’ve always boarded. Which is weird because skateboarding wasn’t really my thing. My friends did. I liked bmx. But have spent more time on a skateboard than most regardless.
It’s quite easy. A lot of heel and toe balancing…… literally like riding a skateboard down a hill. Like identical.
I think people freak out when they have to balance on their toes to turn toe side. Your back is facing downhill and they don’t lean enough toe side and they catch a bump and fall on their arse.
Heel side is comfortable and easy. Toe side is a little bit more technical.
That’s about it.

Snowboarding > skiing. I first tried boarding after about 15 years of skiing and never went back to skis. Its takes about three days to pick it up. But those first three days you are on your arse.

princess hell I am older than you and there is nothing I won't ski at aspen buttermilk snowmass or vail.

Do yourself a favor...take a lesson. I went once without lesson, and 2nd time paid for a lesson and it was much more enjoyable.

I tried snowboarding for a day or two. It was fun but tougher
Snowboarding is not really tougher; it’s just tougher to learn to be adequate. For a normally athletic person, after four days of learning, snowboarding is very easy.
Boarding is a lot easier on your legs. I never get the extreme leg fatigue from boarding that I routinely get from skiing. But boarding is a pain in the arse in the lift lines or on flat ground. On powder days, though, it is the Lord’s own gift. The funnest sport I’ve ever done.

Fear of failure is the number one reason people don't learn to ski, or do anything....
Keep getting up, your muscles catch on. Winning > Losing

Yup- the common thought is that skiing is easier to learn but more difficult to advance, whereas snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to advance.
I’m nearing my 40’s and I’m dedicated to snowboarding moving forward. I’ve done both, but nothing beats that feeling of flow and rhythm on a snowboard.
It’s also great that step in binding tech is becoming more mainstream. Us older folk can give the joints some relief by using Burton step ons, Nidecker Supermatics, and Clew clip in bindings.

Sounds like you didn’t pay for a lesson and tried on your own.

We never smoked until I was 51, husband 50, kids 27,22,19.
I turned it all in after first day of ski school. Hated that crap on my face and just didn’t like any of it. Everyone else did great and loved it .. until ..
Husband tore his acl and mcl on the last day and the second child severely twisted his knee.
We’ll go back to the snow .. but it’ll be without skiing.

Learned how in Japan while stationed there. Had a bunny slope on base and my new friends from all over helped me with the basic. Did ok, hardest part was getting back up on the skis after falling with nothing to hold onto except the poles. The next trip was to a little bit bigger slope and was a lot like your experience. It sucked but kept on going. At the end of the day, we decided to go to the top of the mountain. Mistake. I slid on my back halfway down , probably a easy black run, but steep. Then a group of kids come by in single formation laughing at me in Japanese.

I always say, no one likes skiing first time out.

I’m headed to Purgatory in Durango today. Lots of powder I hear. Started skiing at 21 and have been probably 10 times now at 45. Never had a lesson, I’ve skied a few blacks but I stick with the blues. Legs do get burned out back and forth on those blacks. I’m going to try to lean more tomorrow, I don’t guess I’ve ever consciously tried to lean forward more. Any body got more tips?

My wife is not athletic at all, and she learned when she was 21. She skied one more time in her twenties, never in her 30s and twice in her 40s. She was 52 on our trip last year and enjoyed greens and easy blues with barely a fall. It can be done.
Agree with Obtuse about leg day. I started going to the gym 5 years ago and this last trip we made took the least amount of toll on me physically at 51 years old.

Boarding has to be less painful
Boarding is way more painful. Wife and I switched a few years ago. She ended up back on skis after a broken humerus. I’m still on a board and it’s still more painful than skis 4 trips in.

I went a couple of times as a teenager and not again until 40. I stayed on the blues and had a blast, Irish Coffees during rest breaks kept us going.
Nothing like being in the mountains, I’ve only really been in the big ones about a dozen times.
