Populism is just liberalism with a fresh coat of paint.
Populists grow government for their voters. Liberals grow government for their voters. The sales pitch is the only thing that changes. Liberal messaging is “rich people screwed you (and they're racist)." Populist messaging is “elite people screwed you (and they eat babies).”

Results are the same because neither movement cares what the books look like as long as it plays well to their base and keeps the skim going.

Populism and liberalism both do the same thing. One just slaps a flag sticker on their bumper and the other puts a coexist sticker on theirs.

So anybody currently receiving the majority of benefit from government services but proportionally contributing less will benefit.

But what if they earned less money than you, but bought more junk?

People that pay zero income taxes shouldn’t get shite. I don’t like the income limit but it I understand.

Wonder what the income limit will be.

$100k single file
$150k joint file

My take-they can keep their damn stimulus, just give me a $2000 credit on my tax return.

The problem is we don’t distinguish between sustained labor-force participation and nonparticipation within the same income brackets.

Where people land on the question of whether it’s better to help the deserving even if some undeserving folks benefit, or to restrict benefits even if that hurts the deserving, ends up sucking up all the oxygen and collapses into a left/right fight when there’s a third option: a targeted, means-tested stimulus that’s tied to verified work history. That might function more like a tiny GI Bill than another batch of undifferentiated COVID payouts. But politically, that level of precision is off the table.

At the end of the day, this is an electoral calculation. The only real question is whether you think the political payoff is worth the cost.

I don't particularly care about getting it. I also don't want anyone to get it. Just pay the debt. But in modern America, you have to play to the common base.

Maybe it was better when voting was restricted to the moderately competent and socially involved, when it was just landowners 21 and up. Those who have an idea of how things work, not just "I don't know but I like [insane idea]," in other words the worst version of populism.

Buying poor people votes.

Most in this thread will not see a damn thing. But you'll be feeling the inflationary pressure when everyone spends every single dime all at once.

But income does not directly determine consumption. Tariff revenue is created indirectly from a tax on goods paid for by consumers. What if someone with less spending power than you actually spends more than you? How are they less deserving of recouping loss?

Drive prices up through tariffs and taxation, then toss coins to the masses. Where have I seen this playbook before? Trump is showing his populist Democrat roots.
