Thinking of getting the F out of New Orleans for a bit. It is crazy/irresponsible to drive to (empty) family vacation to ride this out? Don't really see the difference where i'm hunkering down.

This is probably the most sane thing I have read here today.
Hell yes as long as you don'thave or haven't been in contact with anyone positive! Go to the mountains and rent a cabin in the woods. Go rent a house on the beach. Just stay away from other people

What is the big deal about staying at home?

I love my house.

We’ve got a couple of Airbnb and VRBOs reserved to go fishing over the next few weeks.

We’re working remotely and the rentals all have internet access so doesn’t matter where we sit our asses.

ETA: granted, we’re in the Houston metro.

Would rather hunker down in my own home than a hotel/condo 7 hours away.

My niece just drove from UGA in Athens back home to the DFW area since school shutdown (after she did FL Spring Break of course). Had zero problems, granted it was pretty much I-20 almost all the way.

Outdoor board has folks heading to their camps and stuff so don't be surprised if you find the parks and recreation areas crowded while everyone else has the same bug-out ideas.

No pics!

If you have the means and a reasonable destination why wouldn't you?

My dad has a 2nd home in a somewhat rural area in Montana. He's in his 70s with high BP.

He bailed 3 weeks ago and told me he bought about 6 weeks worth of food.

Sure, if you have been exposed in any way, just take it with you for someone else.

Sure - this is a house we'd have to ourselves in the mountains of TN. So not like cramming my family and dog into a hotel room. Quite the opposite.

If you aren’t going, can I use it? I’ll drop by and get the keys.

If it's a family place that hasn't been lived it, that's one thing.
If it's a rental that had strangers in it, that was cleaned by people you'll never meet but for whatever germs they left, that there are no near neighbors...

Compare your situations with the first cluster in France.
One chalet. One of the people flew there almost directly from a meeting in Singapore where there was no disease. But there meeting had an entertainment troupe from Mainland China. Specifically from Wuhan.
The guy who flew to the ski resort infected IIRC at least four friends in the resort as well as people in the town. Then he flew to England where he continued to infect people.

They called him a super spreader. Some people he knew. Others were strangers.

Can you avoid that kind of super spreader? One neighbor of mine started her eight hour drive somewhat dehydrated and got back here without a bathroom stop. Can you do that, or are there members of your family for whom sitting on a toilet is a necessity?
