Somewhere between 5 and 8 hours. If is under 5 I am driving 100% of the time. Between 5 and 8 it is dependent on location and how many metro areas I would have to navigate. That said I have come to the conclusion that leaving the immediate area of my shop for anything other than commuting to work, a necessary evil brough on by poor life choices, is a piss poor idea LOL. I wind up driving the 150 or so miles to Atlanta at least once a month, again because I don't have good sense, and that 2 and a half hour drive often times takes 6-8 and even when it takes only 2 and a half about 60 minutes of that is spent calling other drivers anything other than a child of god as they make every attempt possible to end my existence on the planet....it just ain't worth it.
My shop is 1/8th of a mile on a neighborhood street from a boat ramp. Walmart will deliver groceries and doordash will deliver meals. Amazon will deliver anything but live bait and I can throw a cast net. I find more and more that venturing much past that 1/8 of a mile is just too damned frustrating to attempt....if Walmart would deliver beer, whiskey and cigars there really is no compelling reason to ever go more than 1/8th of mile from the shop.....

4-5 hours and its generally not worth flying although if I can find a cheap enough ticket (like $200 or less) I wont hesitate to fly from Houston to Baton Rouge. I hate that fricking drive with all of my being.

It's not flying you don't like, it's people.

I get your point but returning home from a business trip you had little or no choice to go on is not the same as choosing to go somewhere then returning fulfilled, happy, with good memories, etc. Driving is mostly the same.
It's not the manner of transportation that bothers people as much as it's the reason. When we do something by choice there are different segments of the brain being activated than something we are "forced" to do and that creates different mental and emotional responses.

Used to be 8-9 hours for me but now mostly depends on the trip
BR/NO to Dallas or Atlanta, TN, Orlando, etc was never really a problem
Then you throw kids into the picture and everything changes
Flying is aggravating but now my threshold is more like 5-6 hours
I'll drive 8-9 hours if just me and wife and know we'll need a car at destination
Drove with kids to Dallas when flights were unreasonably expensive and honestly I probably won't ever do that again - the flight is too quick and too easy.
However, now my time is more valuable - there is much more flexibility flying especially with nonstop flights from MSY
I'll spend extra to rent car for the time saved even though picking up and dropping off rentals is more frustrating than the airport experience
I'd love to drive my own car out to Colorado or the west coast but it just doesn't make sense
Hell I might even fly to Houston the next time I go there, that drive is NOT 5 hours and very aggravating

Use to fly everywhere. One day, I couldn't take it anymore. The delays, the other people, the stink from people, the lost luggage, the stolen shite out of my checked bags, etc etc.
What tipped me over was a flight to Hawaii. Was put on the plane and de-planed twice, then flight canceled, then luggage was flown to another state. United blows arse.
Anyway, I'll drive if I can. Can stop for the bathroom whenever I want and not have to go in a tuna can bathroom. Can get out and stretch and make pit stops for food. Don't have to smell other people's shite food on the plane. Don't have to sit on a tarmac for hours while the airline fixes its shite to takeoff.
Flying has become absolutely awful. Its almost as if their business plan is to piss off their customers and make it a terrible experience.

In Jacksonville , FL now for a dinner meeting with some clients that happened last night. Drove from west side of Atlanta on Monday and it took 7 hours with a couple of stops to get to Bent Creek Golf Course for a 3:42 tee. Played 36 yesterday at King & Bear and had the dinner last night at a downtown steakhouse. About to fetch my truck from valet (after this dump I am taking right now) and head home. I used to fly on this type of trip but I have grown to hate the whole experience. Anything under 7 hours is a drive for me. I just add an extra night and expense a round or 2 with whoever I am going to meet with.

Price and layovers. With the recent track record of airports/airlines, I don’t want to depend on them having their shite together in order for me to get to my destination on time. Our travel car is a Volkswagen Atlas, which is very comfortable and makes long trips easy. We did 3000 miles- Shreveport to Philadelphia to Greensboro, NC and back at Thanksgiving 2023 and I drove all of it without much driver fatigue.

With the ease of being able to fly nowadays, going into an airport is similar to going into a DMV.
All of those people make me uneasy.
Under 8 hours, driving. Over 8 hours, contemplating if it's worth it.

What’s your equation to determine if you should drive or fly?
Hours? price? # of people traveling?
If the trip is more than 8 hours of driving then I fly.

Can I make the drive in one day leaving before daylight and arriving mid-late afternoon? If not then I fly

If I can get there in daylight, I'm driving it. Flying short distances, like Jxn, MS to ATL (7-8 hour drive) is silly, you can drive it just as fast as flying, leaving home to getting to hotel room.
Yeah its usually time. I add up connecting flights, and wait times. If its even remotely close to the same, I'm driving.

Am I going somewhere I cannot drive.
I love road trips. I love road trips off the interstate.
Flying is easier, but you miss the things inbetween and I am never in a rush these days.
