Not many kids 13-14 are playing travel ball at that age, most have moved on. The good kids are playing summer school ball, Metro/Legion and/or showcase ball. The kids playing travel ball at that age are the ones that didn’t make their school teams or aren’t that very good.
Middle TN and northern AL are loaded with teams that age group. We’ve played three straight tournaments in 13u in the Lawrenceburg/Loretto Tn area. All the 13 and 14u divisions were full. More than half the kids on our team play middle school ball (some JV, some varsity). But I can guarantee you we’d beat 90% of the middle school teams and we are AA.

laugh at the people here acting like travel ball is expensive. Come try out our world, my kid races motocross. We don't have a season that lasts the summer, we race 12 months out of the year. Bikes, travel, race entry, race fuel, maintenance, practice, trainers.
My best friend growing up used to race go karts when he first started. I'd go to the track with him all the time during the fall when I didn't have baseball going on and I can't imagine the money his parents threw down over the years to let him keep racing (he moved up to some level of dirt track racing).
And the amounts of fist fights I saw between people of all ages is absolutely insane looking back on it. We had a ton of fun though.

Are we pretending like there aren’t 4 teams full of rings for every tournament these days?

Did travel soccer for years and never regretted a dime. Best ever was a tourney where we could not get to the restaurant we were going on a Saturday night so one of the parents prepared gulf seafood poolside while we drank. It helped that the parent has multiple James Beard awards. I guess travel baseball is coming because my 5 and 6 year old love the sport and the 6 year old is already hitting homers.
If I had a dollar for everyone who is confident that their 6 year old will be playing travel ball...
Hitting a “homer” on a tiny field when your own coach is pitching directly to you does not mean you’re travel ball ready. Best of luck if it’s important to your kid, but there’s a lot more to it than that.
And prepare yourself in case it happens, travel baseball is considerably more time consuming than travel soccer.

Travel ball is more of a social status for the parents than anything else. 99% of those kids aren't going to go on to do dick as far as baseball. Mom and dad get to brag to all their friends that little Gavin is in travel ball though and they'll be out of town, again, this weekend so they can't make it to your BBQ.

Spent 7 hours out in the sun/wind yesterday and got our asses handed to us.
14U - 2nd team we played had 5 high school players on it, dudes were 6' - 6'2" 220 - 245 etc etc They killed us
Sunburned, dehydrated but going back for more at 10:45 am
Enjoy your day sitting in the house listening to your ole lady tell you what to do

It's very amusing to me to see youth sports back before the major sports leagues

my son filled in and played up this weekend for a 10u AA team. It was hot as hell but I learned that a yeti cup will hold two beers so I was good. Milfs everywhere. Was a great time. Son went 3-4 with single, double, and triple. He played left field, third, and pitched. He got 2 double plays, one at third and one in left(caught fly ball and throw out kid at first). Which was good because he had never played either position. Was a great day looking forward to today

I took my 14 yr old 100 miles north so he could do a training session with some older boys and two college coaches. He was happy with his performance, and I thought he looked good out there...but who knows what those coaches are looking for? I don’t want my son setting his sights on playing soccer for a small school in MS, but it’s always nice to impress people when given an opportunity. Who knows if he did though?
ETA: As an 8th grader he’d be happy with some playing time on varsity.
