ETA- It's been over a decade, but I do remember Daytona sand being really hard packed, almost like pavement. I can believe a guy getting tackled face first into it could sustain those injuries.

I emailed them, they fixed it, and actually replied "thanks!" this time. But alas, they still used the abbreviation "Fla" instead of "FL" as the AP stylebook would dictate. I don't have the heart to call them out on it. Journalism, as a craft, is and has been dead for a while.
