I was treated very nicely when I came back to visit Baton Rouge this past May, and yes, I had preconceived notions and was super scared to be out and about. The only issue I had was some girl staring at me at Top Golf when I was there with a group of family and friends.

So, do you have any workable ideas as to how to fix this?

By briefly reviewing a page or 2 of your post history, you seem like a pretty reasonable uh, person.

Do you understand how this confuses many of us? I don't want to belittle you at all, that's not my intention and I hope others don't either, but I would think that a reasonable transgendered person would realize that the he/she/them etc is just going to happen and comes with the territory.

To file a lawsuit over a pronoun or wanting to share bathrooms is just asking for trouble and seems to me would hurt the overall cause and hope for acceptance.

I've heard that in the corporate world, people are now having to put a disclaimer on emails that the pronouns used in the email aren't suggesting gender. Do you agree that's ridiculous? I work with several Indians and I have no idea their gender in many of the emails I write and have yet to offend one, at least that I know of. They usually laugh when I finally speak to them over Skype and they're a different gender than I've been assuming. To file a lawsuit over this 'abuse' is absolutely absurd.

Supadave,
It’s a very difficult thing to understand for nearly anyone not dealing with it. It’s also difficult to to read the negative press reports involving folks in the (t) portion of our community.

To give you an idea of my work situation, I came out publicity two years ago and to my team and HR at work about 10 months ago. Told them my transition plan, said I would ease into everything, and that I would use the single bathroom until a couple of months after I started presenting as a woman, so it would be easier for me and others to be comfortable using the bathroom. People asked me what I wanted to be called and I said “she” only once I started dressing as a woman. I kept my first name since it’s gender neutral. Folks mess up my pronouns at work all the time because they knew me as a guy for years. I don’t get mad or upset if someone says he or him. I know they’re trying and that’s what’s important. My work has been fantastic and my coworkers treat me wonderfully. This is a very conservative company also.

You’re always going to have outliers and people who go to extremes in any community. The T community isn’t exempt. There’s a lot of things that get sensationalized in the news outlets just because someone makes waves for whatever reason. Like I’ve said many times before here, I’m just trying to live my as normally as possible and with dignity.

If I pipe up in all of these transgender threads here in the OT, it’s to show folks here that there are many other trans persons like me who are out there.

I'm thinking this is all anyone is asking for, to understand how to deal with it before it becomes a problem for anyone. Thx.

You’re welcome QT. I know I get downvoted into oblivion, but I try to bring some perspective to these issues. I’m sure there’s not a folks here on the OT that personally know a friend or family member who’s trans.

Thank you for the genuine and thorough response. I guess I just don't get it and probably never will. I consider myself to be rather 'gay friendly' in the fact that it really doesn't matter to me if someone is gay or not. It's just not that big of deal to me if a man or woman goes home to another man or a woman. There are many reasons to either respect or not respect another person but the partner they go home to is not really one of those factors for me. But the trans thing is different for me.

One thing that surprises me is that I've never known a transgendered person. Never even knew of one that worked down the hall or that I used to work with or anything like that. I know of 100's of gay people, but absolutely 0 that are transgendered. Suddenly, it's this big deal and like you said, we're exposed to it either in the news or on forums such as this, the subject seems to come up quite often.

Perhaps it's because I've lived my entire life in Louisiana and obviously we're more backwards than most and far from progressive. But you'd think I'd still have had a old classmate or something that popped up on Facebook all these years later and be the opposite gender. Hell, I've had several that I knew back from high school that we all figured were gay but were in the closet than when FB arrived, they were living openly gay lives. But none that switched genders.

Best of luck to you, I'm glad you work in an environment that has been friendly towards your decision, or transition, or revelation, or whatever it is that caused your enlightenment.

I don't mean that as smart arse as it sounds, btw.

Don’t worry, you’re not ;) Thank you very much for the kind words.

I’ve had a couple of my football teammates from college come out as gay, but like you, I don’t know another friend or classmate who’s trans. We are very few and far between. I stayed in the closet until I was 42; I’m sure there’s many others like me who won’t ever come out or have the ability to. For the record, I was born in Baton Rouge, raised in ATL and have lived in the PNW for the last 20 years. It was easier to me to come out here.

I grew up in the bar business, Uptown and downtown, thought I had seen it all, and I saw things! LOL! This whole T thing has got to be a MoFo to y'all and then the people around you at this point. It's the newness more than anything I would guess. It's probably a norm in NOLA, but I run in different circles now so I don't hear about it.
It's clear this isn't going away, so I wish you happy trails and hope you come back and add to any posts you see fit.
Thx.

I've never met a trans person other than the French Quarter Rue Paul type and I'm not sure that qualifies. I think he's a drag queen but I don't claim to be knowledgeable on the subject.

I know plenty of gay people though. I think trans people are far less common and present far more uncomfortable issues for society like bathrooms, sports etc.

Consider this crazy thought - NIKE is sponsoring this employee to do this.

They want to set a corporate precedent for other ultra liberal "woke" corporations so in the future that they have to comply with this garbage too. They want to censor language - what you can say - undermine your 1st Amendment right to free speech. Force companies to waste their resources & money to program the behavior and language of their employees. For NIKE to pay the pocket change of 1.1 million to advance their liberal causes in the name of corporate law is nothing to them. It will drastically effect all companies that don't have a ton of money to pay fines to comply.

ALL FOR 0.6% OF THE POPULATION. Google it.
Change corporate law for the sake of 1.3 million whacked out people. Absolute absurdity!!!

The only ones I know well are confused teens. It may be at some point they'll really change but for the inept being it's just a cool thing they learned on the internet.

I do know a person who has kinda made a transition but they are like 60 years old.
