I have. Several times. And while the European trains are cleaner and better to ride, they still suck.

I would suggest to stay there and never come back to New Orleans for your sake, but being in Memphis and Chicago might actually be worse.

I took it from Champaign to Memphis and back once when it was too dangerous to drive. Trip was fine. New Orleans to Chicago would be way too long imo

Took Amtrak from NO to NYC in 1989. Rode coach the entire trip. Never got back on amtrak after that and never will. Flying can be a pain in the arse sometimes but the speed and convenience more than make up for this. There is nothing quick, convenient or inexpensive about amtrak.
Trains in Europe are a different story. Rode those in the late 80's in Western Europe.

My parents did it 20 years ago. My mom is the most tolerant and cheapest person I know. When she paid extra to fly home I knew it was something I would never do.

SWA flight got canceled at Christmas and we had to take Amtrak from New Orleans to San Antonio. It took 15-16 hours. Wasn't all that bad overall, a lot of room to move around and the vibe was much more relaxed, but it took forever. If you're willing to spend twice as much time as it would take to drive, go for it. You can also bring a lot more luggage and there is no TSA.

Every time I have looked it is like a while week to get there and cost more than a flight.
exactly. Numerous times I thought how cool it would be to take the train to see sections of the country. I always end up flying. It’s the timeframe & costs. It’s like a bus on tracks with so many stops. Plus the cost of a car With comfortable seating and sleeping versus sitting in an airline seat makes a plane ticket look like an Uber ride at times.

Try the Amtrak Midnighter. Departs at 5:15 pm.
Unbenownst to most people, there is an all-night poker game, that is run by the senior conductor. They buy-in is $500.
There are a few big rollers each week, like Doyle Lonergan and Whisperin' Dave Smally. They usually play no limit, but if a player named Henry Gondorf sits in, run away immediately - he's a card shark.
By the way, if you want in, just mention my name.. Oily Joe Sullivan.

At least in Mississippi, the tracks always run through the worst part of every small town, so you’ll see a lot of dilapidated shacks and litter.

Trains used to be classy when they were run by the railroads and made a profit.

Each railroad had it's own china as well. No plastic plates.

Amtrak on the other hand is like a huge Greyhound bus.

And the scenery is fine. Except for the fact you want to go from NOLA to Chicago... There is no scenery on that route.
