In the event that I receive a ticket, I usually just pay the fine (particularly if it was speeding).

However, this case really bothers me. I was driving home (3 mph below speed limit) and got to the stop sign then turned onto the street. Next thing I know I am stopped by the police. Apparently it was for "Failure to obey stop sign".

I didn't debate the officer and just took the ticket. He asked if I was intoxicated, told him I was not. He did not check if I was DUI ( I honestly wasn't).

The charge is almost twice what a speeding ticket would have been. Do you guys think I should fight it (its more than $240)

EDIT: I get that they are going to take an officer's word over mine. I going to try to negotiate the fee if nothing else. I am going to see the city attorney over traffic violations and try to talk this out. Even if I can get an extension its better than nothing (considering that I was not even given a month to pay).

To all of you who defend cops, I want you to know I do respect people who do police officer work. However, I have read about what REALLY causes tickets to be so high. It's not the officer's fault per se, usually its city bureaucracy.

And there are actual REAL crimes going on (homicide, theft, etc. ) that actually require real punishments but go absolutely nowhere.

Go to court, say you were drunk, and accuse the cop of not doing his job.

Probably didn't come to a complete stop. Pay up, its your word against the cop and the court will take his word over yours any day and twice on Sunday.

Maybe you should have driven home 3 mph below the speed limit, got to the stop sign, STOPPED, then turned onto the street.

Doesn't the cop have to show up to court if you contest it? What happens if they don't show up? I could be wrong.

I know that really sucks because only about 1/1000 people come to a complete stop at any given stop sign. It's like shooting fish in a barrel if a cop wants to write this ticket.

This varies by how bad the city/county/parish wants the money. I had one I felt I had a legit gripe about (malfunctioning sign) and went twice to traffic court, both times I was given a new court date because the cop didn't show. Third time the judge felt bad for me and threw out the ticket.

Yes the cop has to show up or it's dismissed. I once got a ticket in which neither me nor the cop showed up and it was dismissed but I got lucky there.

So I am assuming that you did NOT stop at the stop sign. Guilty pay fine.

Go to the DA's office and see if you can get it reduced to a non-moving violation so it won't hit your insurance. You'll pay something like $200 to essentially bribe the DA.

How it works here in Birmingham, I went to court to contest one a similar ticket. The first court date is just preliminary for you to plead one way or the other. Cop won't be there for that. They had an attorney there and offered a deal that I go to driving school. Other option was to plead not guilty and then get another scheduled court day to actually see the case. I just took the driving school, paid the court fee, and nothing goes on my record.

You did it. He caught you.

Everything else you posted is just trying to muddy the water to make it look like you shouldn't pay it.

You can't win in court. As said, they will believe the cop over you.

There may be a driving course offered in place of the fine but would still have to pay court costs.

If the ticket says when the court date is, you can request a delay and there's a good chance the cop won't show up in which case it will be thrown out.
