Hundreds of baws fighting over a ball. America needs more things like this. Would you play it?

Violence breaks out in a small English town during a medieval "Shrove Tuesday" tradition. The scuffles took place in Atherstone, Warwickshire during the 820th Atherstone Ball Game, as hundreds of eager competitors battled to gain control of a sphere. The town has a population of around 10,000. It's a dog-eat-dog event, with contestants using all means necessary to be in control of the ball, from punching and kicking their way through crowds, to climbing on the surrounding buildings to gain an advantage. The game dates back to the medieval times and the two main rules are that (fortunately) you are not allowed to kill anyone, and that whoever holds the ball when time is up is declared the winner. In its early iterations a bag of gold was used instead of a ball. The game lasts for two hours.

I’ve long advocated for melee battles between groups with grievances. Better to get it out than to have it all pent up

Somebody broke the First Rule by writing this article.

So like a scaled-up smear the queer?

We did this every day on the school playground...

Remember playing a form of this game in elementary and middle school.

Smear the queer was the best

Why were they all defending the corridor toward the end? Is the ball in there?

The OT should do this at Sonic, I'd like to bitch slap a few posters

IIIRC this is in the Sports Hall Of Shame because the rules for scoring a goal are so hard that they went at least 50 years without scoring one at some point in the 20th century.
Edit - Apparently I am thinking of a different podunk British “wall game” tradition.
The one I am thinking of is similar to Rugby with the townies on one side and the university kids on the other.

We played this at recess in school when I was young. We called it "Kill the Man With the Ball". We used a football.

I'd just wait for 1 hour 55 minutes then, and let the competition sort itself out and then wade in all fresh and nimble and wreck shop.

We call that Black Friday shopping

That looks fun as shite.
Definitely like smear the queer, but with some sort of teams, some yellow-vested “referees”, and of course the punching and kicking.
We also played a game in the club pool with a greased watermelon. Two teams wrestling a greased watermelon (that floated) to put it up on the opponent’s side of the pool. Dunking was allowed. Pulling down other people’s swimsuits was discouraged but a frequent tactic, etc.
Good times.

This is what they do as their Fat Tuesday really. Add Pancake Day to that as well. Ash Wednesday is like any other.
