I work with a lot of academy grads and have for a long time, a common sentiment by most of them, not all, is that if they had it to do over again they wished they would have gone to a conventional university and enjoyed college
And guys that had the option to go to the academy and didnt (me), wish they would have gone

Its one of those things in life where you cant to both, so you will always wonder "what if" no matter what you choose.

Will be an interesting process when we sit down to help him decide whether to take either appointment or go to a traditional school.

Seems like it would be pretty impossible to party at LSU from 18-22 and go to west point at 18-22

Too late in the year for football, but lacrosse season is about to start, USMA and USNA both have solid teams each year.

Besides the Cadet Chapel at USMA there is a separate Catholic Chapel as well. I have had dealings with their musicians.

it's very common, or at least it used to be, for kids that meet all criteria for academy entrance except their grades are maybe borderline, to go to regular colleges to get them up prior to entrance, LSU however, may not be the ideal place for this, know three brothers that are NA grads, the oldest one is the most junior because he had to do this

Contact the your Rep. and Senator’s offices at the beginning of the application process and start the application process early. If you wait to start senior year the kid doesn’t have much of a chance.

And of course it helps if you make a decent sized campaign contribution to your Rep. and both Senators.

Please edit this. It makes it look like our representatives and Senators can be bought, and we know that's not true.

West Point and Annapolis are both great choices. I guess it all depends on what kind of job your son wants to do. Good luck to your son in whatever path he takes. I would have loved to have gone to West Point.

Didn’t help that on her flight out of BWI last week, a fallen Navy sailor was being carried home and she watched the loading from the gate.

It’s a sobering and humbling sight. I was visiting Arlington a few years ago when a funeral procession was making its way through. It was a sad but awesome sight. Couldn’t think of a better way to be buried.

West Point is beautiful.

Not this time of year, but May-Nov it's absolutely stunning. The Hudson River valley is a great trip and so close to NYC.

Congrats to the OP and his son!

Can always go to the Merchant Marine Academy if it doesn’t work out.

Connections? Once you are a viable candidate, the visit invites are fairly common.

I had understood that the LsOR could be somewhat difficult to get, but I know little about the process. Congrats, nonetheless.

Yeah, that's kind of why I asked my question on page 1. I had understood that a lot of times there could be a quid pro quo.

If possible could you confirm how a regular tourist can visit, and take a tour? I went as a kid, and it was awesome. Just heard that they shut it down some for vistors. Just wondering if true or pretty welcoming.

I think this is a vacation visit that all should take their children to see. True history, and beautiful. Not to far north from NYC either.
