Don't rule out the Coast Guard Academy. Admissions are a little different, entirely based on applications, not congressional appointments. They also allow transfers from other colleges. And you get to spend your summers on a tall ship.

Coast Guard is the most selective of the academies!!!

and don't forget King's Point (Merchant Marine Academy), you graduate with a Navy Reserve commission, and pretty much the only way you can get a job on a US flagged ship these days!!!

The nominations were helped by us not being in a crazy-competitive district. I think he would have had a pretty good shot regardless (top of his class, almost perfect ACT, 4 sport letterman, class president, etc.), but once you get a slate of hundreds for one slot, you just never know.

The BGO (Blue and Gold Officer, liaison for the academy) told me he had never seen an application as strong as my boy's, but that's in a district where the pool is considerably thinner than a big metro district full of high-end schools.

That was me 25 years ago, and I suspect your son is a strong candidate in any district. I went in thinking I would be somewhat above average, but was ranked top 5 after the first year. I was actually surprised at the number of people who seemed to struggle academically. It was worse with the athletes and kids who came by way of the prep schools, but even regular admittance guys seemed to have quite a few who were not very strong students.

I ended up leaving after the first year. I might have stayed if I had gone to Annapolis, but West Point was just a little to isolated from any real social activity for me - especially during the first year. Ultimately I decided it wasn't worth sacrificing some of the fun of college when my ultimate goal was med school. West Point doesn't necessarily help with that and the military commitment goes way up if I were to stay and then go to med school.

I think this happens quite a bit with kids to whom academics has always come naturally. They get into an environment that challenges them for the first time, and they struggle to find their footing.

my daughter, no pics, and no brag, was valedictorian of her hs class, with the typical 6.5 weighted GPA that every kid seems to have these days, never got a B, K-12. went to DePaul and I don't remember what course it was but she was really frustrated and having a real struggle with it, terrified that she would get the first B of her life

yeah, not quite as simple and nonchalant as OP implies if Braxtyn Zwin is a white male

Where was I nonchalant or implied it was simple?

With me being prior service and pro military, my wife dreads the day one of our boys tells her he's going to a military academy. Of course, Id be over the moon

What class were you in? What company were you assigned to during “Beast Barracks” and plebe year?

I worked as a civilian at West Point for a year. Beautiful area and great traditions. Seeing a football game at Michie Stadium is a must.

Class of 97. It was a long time ago but I think it was Charlie Company during Beast. I don’t remember what company I was in during plebe year but I was in Bradley Barracks and had to line up in formation by the clock next to the honor nazi building.

I was a year ahead of you but I was in H1. Are you from Houma and went to Tulane? If so, I remember you.

Son should do ROTC - still commission and he'll have social skills and a normal college experience.

Or just go to college and then OCS. ROTC is lame.
