What does he want to do? Annapolis is tougher academically, but he could get stuck being a POG SWO. If he wants to be a warfighter and guaranteed Infantry, he should go to West Point.

What a wonderful choice he has to make. You and your wife have obviously done a great job.

Tell him to consider, “One, if by land, and two, if by sea”

What traditional schools is he looking at? Would he enlist even if he went to a traditional school?

I can’t imagine my life replacing the 8 years I spent at LSU with the Air Force Academy or something. Seems like a buzz kill.

Why would anyone want to go to college to become infantry? You could drop out of high school, get a GED, and become a bullet sponge.

You have to understand that once there and finished, there will be a life time of true connections in the future. High up ones at that which can open many doors. It's more then just a school of higher learning.

Connections? Once you are a viable candidate, the visit invites are fairly common.

Pretty sure he's talking about the letters of recommendation.

Congratulations to him.

I took a tour of Annapolis before my high school junior year when I had dreams of going there (didn't happen). It is an amazing school and Annapolis is a nice town.

It’s the leadership schools you get. He would get a Ranger school slot and possibly SOF he he stays in. Most academy grads only stay in for 6-8 years. There is a lot more money to be made in the civilian sector. Abbott Labratories, for example, hires a lot of USMA and USNA grads, starting salary is around 150k + bonus.

My son graduated last year. He has two buddies at West Point and one at Annapolis. The two at West Point seem to like it better, for what it’s worth.

I went to private catholic school and no one was really interested in the Academies except my one friend. He asked if I would take the ASVAB seriously with him. We both cranked through that thing and I’d be surprised if he scored higher than I did. He went to the Air Force Academy. I got so many calls from recruiters. He was a much more attractive candidate, so I’m not saying I could have made it into an academy.

I got physics and applied physics degrees from LSU and have worked at NASA and military sites, many of them, for 17 years now. Mostly do fracture mechanics on ground based equipment...still, would have been fun to grow silicon on sapphire for a weapons system...or whatever for the military.

I've been to both. West Point is gorgeous but as a navy guy, I hope he chooses Annapolis which is beautiful in its own right.

Congrats either way Op!

I work with a lot of academy grads and have for a long time, a common sentiment by most of them, not all, is that if they had it to do over again they wished they would have gone to a conventional university and enjoyed college, I had a hs teacher try to get me to go to the AFA, he was a liaison to the academy and taught aviation at our school, my uncle, a former AF pilot heard abut that and had a long sit down with me to talk me out of it
