That would be exactly my point actually.
So because most people are not hit by a tornado during a tornado outbreak, we should just not talk about it at all?

I didn’t say anyone shouldn’t talk about it. I’m saying the entire state of Louisiana shouldn’t have closed today because of it.
This type of broad “shut everything and hunker down” scenarios should be reserved for more acute threats.

I got a cool vid from my bro for the Houma cell. No tornado but definitely some lowering / spin.

What time is New Orleans getting hit?
Posted on 12/14/22 at 2:14 pm to Indefatigable
Y’all argue like a bunch of school girls. Be thankful some people are taking their time to inform others about the weather. I’d rather low impact any day of the week because that means lives aren’t being decimated by the damage. Chill out and enjoy the off day

Firstly, none of us here make those decisions, so I'm not sure why you're pissed at us about it. Secondly, no one knows exactly where a tornado will form and hit before it happens, which is why forecasts, severe weather outlooks, and tornado watches are broad. Only when storms actually form can we project a more specific place that they may hit (which is why tornado warnings are smaller and more specific). Because we don't know where tornadoes will form, officials can't just decide to shut down specific things, they have to be broad in their decisions about those things.

Tulane hasn’t even warned our population of non-local students about this storm and we are still expected to show up for our afternoon and evening finals today.

right? imagine being upset that a more populated area didn't get hit by a tornado a week before christmas.
some people are just miserable fricks

based on what I see from pictures down there at the moment...it looks like its already passed.
Sorry that was my joke for the day

Right. So hence my question.
When did we decide that the threat of severe thunderstorms warranted shutting down broad geographic swaths of businesses, governments, schools, etc? No one has been able to answer why this has suddenly become a thing in the past few years.

Look a-hole. I’m the only one that can come in and screwup a weather thread. Now take a hike.

The entire state didnt shut down...I went to work, my daughter had 2 exams, my wife is still at work, my mail got delivered, my UPS and FED EX packages got delivered, I bought diesel, garbage truck picked up the garbage.....
What do you mean the "entire state of Louisiana shouldn’t have closed today"?

Start a thread on your question. I’m sure you’ll get an answer.

I’m not off work brah. I’m not home dealing with kids. I genuinely do not understand why this is what we do now. I believe it undermines peoples perception of weather warnings.
This makes several instances in a row for the Baton Rouge area where the actual day-of weather was nowhere near the level that would cause concern.
