68 mph gust reported in a few minutes ago in Norfolk, VA. We haven’t even had a thunderstorm.
For reference that’s 6 mph away from hurricane force winds.

found this house IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD after severe storms moved through Upson County
if your house moves to the middle of the road... does that change your mailing address?

68mph sustained winds in different than a 68 mph wind gust. A 74 mph wind gust in a TS doesn’t make it a hurricane. There’s a big difference.

I’m aware. That’s why I said “for reference”

do you think we've "maxed out" our ability to forecast tornadoes... esp when it comes to tornado warnings and trying to give lead time to those directly in the paths of potentially tornadic storms?
I'm not a met, and I apologize for the reply to such an old comment. I'm just now able to start catching up on the thread.
I think the bulk of advancement going forward will be in the areas that most people will never see. Forecasting will continue to improve with research and development of models/parameters. Take shear, for example. They have incorporated shear into radar now, and I think it will continue to get better. Accurate measurements of real time wind speeds is an area seeing alot of research. Most research seems to be focusing on studying the winds, and that research is making it into forecasting tools.
The particulars of tornadoes is driving all research today, it seems. The minute details that can clue a met into what is really going on in a storm, IE: is it actually a tornado, or a false TVS? Is it actually on the ground yet? How violent are the winds and how far do they extend? What will the damage path look like? That, I think, is where we will see advancement. And in the Southeast, like yesterday, all of that is needed when most tornadoes are rain wrapped or out of sight due to terrain.

Update to the tornado that went through East Chattanooga:
Storm survey has found EF-3 damage with winds estimated around 145mph. Storm survey is still ongoing, we'll continue to post updates as they come in.

Crap! Stopped tracking last night around 10 (I am in Pville). My dad's side of the family is all in the Seneca/Clemson area. All safe, but without power. My cousin has a hole in his roof. My uncle's house looks untouched and all of the trees around him are down. This is a very dense pine woods area.

Half the stoplights in Berkeley and Dorchester county are out. Also they closed down where I work at noon to get deep cleaning so your boy getting paid a full’s day work for less than half a day’s work.
Lovely out now. You can barely tell it’s end times.

Having followed this thread since the start and seeing the size of these nados and the debris balls, I thought we would see earth ripped up and de-barked trees in the pictures this morning. Thankful it doesn't look as bad as I thought. Still terrible but not as bad as I imagined.

It looks awful but I was imagining bare earth with a de-barked tree stump here and there. Seen that in person before and you don't even know where to start looking for people because there is nothing there.
