I kind of think the safe room bc the interior bathroom is only a half bath and is only one wall removed from an exterior wall. Or, at least I think it’s considered an exterior wall. There’s the bathroom door which faces a wall, which faces our garage door and knowing how poorly garage doors stand up to these things to me that’s an exterior wall
I couldn’t say. I’ve got a closet space underneath our stairs, but it’s only one wall from an exterior wall on three sides. I’ve just always heard that underneath stairways were good as they are more reinforced. That space is only about 15 feet from our front door, though. Only other area is a short hallway at the opposite corner of the house, but it’s surrounded by a door to the garage, a door to the laundry room, a door to a bathroom and a door to a bedroom, all of which have exterior walls. I figure the wind would blow the doors open potentially, so I’m thinking stairs.

Not to derail this thread but Gov Ivey today withdrew some COVID stuff but declared another emergency that activated the guard.
quote:
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has issued a state of emergency during Sunday’s severe weather threat.
The proclamation suspends portions of Ivey’s statewide COVID-19 order. Thus allowing Alabamians to seek shelter during the storms. The entire state is under a moderate risk with the possibility of EF-2 tornadoes or stronger. The proclamation also activates the National Guard.

Also, keep in mind that now if you have a shelter already, or you have one built, you can register its exact GPS location with the local FEMA branch. They will record the location, and know where to look if everything in your area is leveled and unrecognizable.
I'm not sure how to go about it, but I know you can do it.

We are talking over 5 years ago when I did the bulk of my looking, but where did I make a claim that's "patently false"?
After stating that I've seen EF4 damage within minutes after it passed, the key phrase is I "can't imagine." You do understand that the phrase, "I can't imagine" doesn't equate to making a fact-based claim, don't you?
And I still can't imagine how anything above ground could survive a level higher damage than that.
Okay so according to your FEELS you don’t think an above ground shelter can survive anything above an EF-4.
What you said is 100% false regardless of your FEELS. I bet you are a Hillary supporter also. That turned out as well as your knowledge on tornado shelters.

No he wasn’t. He even further clarified that he wasn’t.
To shorten this up.....stop clogging a tornado thread with dumbshit arguments.

You haven't been in Alabama long enough to live through an F5.
I'm not sure you survive an F5 below ground unless it isn't your day.

From some research years back, by far the safest tornado shelter is an underground one inside of your home (garage, etc.), but unfortunately that is the one type of shelter that's the least most "doable" as far as retrofitting one in goes.
I've seen first-hand the damage from an EF4, and outside of a miracle, I can't imagine anyone above ground surviving a direct hit from an EF5.
There’s actually plenty of above ground shelters rated to handle EF5 winds and impacts (if not all of them?). There are plenty of stories out there showing them still standing after everything around them was flattened. In ground shelters are not as appealing to me because of the potential to flood, float and/or corrode over time.

Well, that sure was nice of Maw Maw. Nevermind the fact that during the storms last week most county EMAs took it upon themselves to override her order and opened shelters. I don't think they gave much of a damn what the good governor thought or felt, and it was the correct decision on their part.

You may end up being right most of the time but if I was building a house I’d still feel better putting in on the interior
Oh, 100%, just for the psychological factor.
I have a friend who has a safe room. When he and his wife built their house, she wanted the common living area of the house to be completely without TVs and she wanted a safe room for hurricanes and tornadoes. His way to make everyone happy was that he made the safe room into his balling home theater. The heavy safe room construction lent itself well to soundproofing the rest of the house from the theater. He just made the closet in the room where his AV equipment is stored a little bit bigger to stock with supplies to ride out a hurricane. He's got like 3 tiers of those giant 4 cushion couches in there and the lowest one pulls out into a king sized bed. He can seat like 20 people or sleep 6-8.
He had a place where he can relax and watch TV or have people over to watch a game, his wife got her space without TV intrusion, and they both got a place they can hide in if need be.

Yeah, the plans I have call for a certain door. In fact, it won't pass inspection without the correct door. My neighbor mentioned the cost of the door, but I don't remember what it was.
I built a new house last year and put a FEMA safe room in. I went above the recommended door because I wanted to use it as a gun safe to. Door cost 2800 if I remember right

I don’t see what’s so confusing about that, if you have a normal exterior wall then add a square room to it then all three of the walls from the new square room will be exterior

They had a big walk in closet that had an exterior wall, they added a square “room” to the exterior wall of that closet making 3 of the walls exterior
Ahhhhh.....nevermind.
