That storm had great lead time. It had been tracked for around an hour before getting into the Laurel area. There would have been plenty of time to make a decision, get shite together, and leave. They may have gone to a shelter or friend's place. Or they may have just drove north out of the worst area.
There was no lack of warning for this storm and that area.

Gotcha. I guess I'm just thinking about it from our end of things. IF we have any weather events like this, we're going to be in the dark. No way to see where it's coming from. Hopefully it will fizzle before it gets this far. I've considered installing a shelter for peace of mind. Might have to make that investment. Would make me feel a lot better on days like this.

We are watching closely at this stuff heading our way in Huntsville.

Keep watching, but you're probably going to be okay in Huntsville. FYI Brad Travis has been on air for a few hours. They had nothing but reruns on today, so he's gone live through the whole thing.

We've been considering the same thing. A neighbor just finished up an addition to their house where they put in a large safe room that is a huge walk-in closet. You can't even tell what it is now that the addition is finished. It is built to FEMA standards and should withstand pretty much anything.

I’m just trying to wrap my head around what circumstances would warrant leaving your house in the midst of one of these things and where would you go quickly enough that was safer?

If you were following this thread you could easily just head straight south 15-20 before it arrives. The guys tracking them here can tell you exactly where they’re headed for the most part.

Also, if you live in southern Mississippi you might have heard of those places either from driving through or at work.

Yea if I lived in Mississippi I would definitely get one installed. Baton Rouge has the Indian mounds however which ward off tornados and severe weather, so in good.

Yeah, I’ve seen that same thing and that’s really cool. Unfortunately, that’s not an option for us. In all the research I’ve done, I think I’ve settled on Valley Storm Shelters due to their CORELOCK anchoring system and internal bracing. Just seems to be a super solid unit.

615pm...Storms will be moving into southeast Mississippi over the next few hours. The environment is very favorable for tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds. Have a plan in case a warning is issued for your location.
