Believe they look at GPA and hours after the second semester. Might be able to bring it up if ace the second semester

If one were to be a recipient of the honors TOPS award yet had an unfortunate first semester, is TOPS gone forever? The unfortunate part of it is a 0.5 gpa with only 8 credit hours earned.

For those in the know, what are the options, if any?

F's don't count as credit, no?

If so, you better get ready to do 16 hours in the spring; 8 hours in the summer.

3.0 at end of the year to keep Honors stipends.. so that ship has sailed

I'm also curious how you got 8 credit yours with a 0.5 GPA? Be advised that credits you received from AP testing out of classes do NOT go toward the 24 total hours required for the year

How many hours were actually taken?

I appreciate the feedback.

17 hours were initially scheduled. One course was dropped prior to drop date.
For first semester students, the schedule is now handed out by the university. Not an excuse, but it was a tough course load. BIO 1001, CHEM 1201, EE 1810, MATH 1550. Hindsight tells me the courses could have been changed after the schedule was handed out.

14 hours resulted in two F’s and two D’s. One of the D’s was a 5 credit hour course.

I know how bad this is. I also know why it happened and what corrective actions need to be I forced to move forward.

Overall gpa is 1.6 and overall hours earned is 26, which factors in college credits obtained from advanced high school courses and testing. Unfortunately those courses do not count towards the TOPS requirement of 24 credit hours.

how do you have only a .5 with 8 hours earned? Something’s not adding up here…

ETA: maybe I forgot how to calculate gpa properly

I definitely was doing it wrong. Ignore me.

So thanks to a curve they got a D in one class?

They don't want to be in school if this is what they finished with. Don't force a kid who don't want to be in school to stay in school.

You need 24 hours per year and it now includes summer semester.

Join the military. I’m not even joking. I wasn’t ready for college either. You join the military for 4 years, get your mind right and figure out what you want to do, go to school when you’re out on their dime and you’re a veteran.

That’s exactly what I did. Proud veteran.

Better do intersession and summer school, take the easiest classes you can find to get A’s. Then focus on your major pre-reqs next year

Yep. You can regain TOPS, but you lost the extras/stipend that went with the higher teir.

Hope the partying and procrastination was worth it.
