Yes, but not because of the GPA. It's gone for good for not having enough credit hours. If your GPA is too low you just get put on probation. Not enough hours and you're SOL.

They can drop below full time and keep TOPS as long as they make it up within the academic year. My son had to drop a class while dealing with an extended illness and dropped below full time. He made up the hours in summer school and LSU notified TOPS once he met that requirement.

GPA was not an issue so I’m not speaking from experience on that part but I think they get put on probation. I also think if they lose it they can appeal.

I missed the 8 hours part. Yeah you have to have 12 to be full time

Just need 24 over the Fall/Spring semesters.

So a successful 16 credit hour Spring semester could potentially save the TOPS? That’s the part I’m unclear of.

Yes. They need 24 hours within the academic year so summer school is also an option.

How many hours were actually taken?

No TOPS this semester.

Can get it back if you end the spring semester with a 3.0 overall GPA for the year AND you get 16 credit hours.

If you get 16 credit hours and only a 2.5 overall GPA I think you can get the regular TOPS back.

We would to know the total graded hours to helo you figure out what you need to do.

0.5 with only eight hours?

I’m not even mad, that’s impressive

I went 4.5 years and to my surprise they paid for my 9th semester, so I really didn’t lose out on anything.

If I remember correctly, TOPS covers tuitions for 8 semesters, so you were covered for your 9th since you didn't get the money for your 2nd.

I graduated in 7 semesters and the final remaining semester I was able to use for my first semester of graduate school IIRC.

Damn, how shitty were you doing in the other classes to drop enough credit hours down to 8, yet still finish with a 0.5?

Honestly I’m not even mad, that’s impressive.

I know a guy who pulled 0.0. Buckshot. Combination of pledging Pike and the Cartoon Network go-live.

ETA I guess I should tell the whole story. That was our first semester. I ran into him at Kinko's about 5 years later. I was getting a thesis printed, and he was starting over as a 24-year-old USM freshman.

If one were to be a recipient of the honors TOPS award yet had an unfortunate first semester, is TOPS gone forever? The unfortunate part of it is a 0.5 gpa with only 8 credit hours earned.

Join the military. I’m not even joking.

I wasn’t ready for college either. You join the military for 4 years, get your mind right and figure out what you want to do, go to school when you’re out on their dime and you’re a veteran.

You can earn the basic TOPS money back, but the Honors stipends are gone (at least that was the case back in 2004)

While TOPS may be gone, you can definitely get that thing we’ll above a 3.0 in no time. I too foolishly languished away my first semester of college. There’s time to get it straightened out.
