It all started bc some douche got in trouble for stealing LSU property and burning it. This guy wanted to put a spin on it and go the freedom of speech angle. The initial issue was bc of vandalism, not burning a flag.
Exactly, some hippie trashed out campus because Osama got shot and the grad student thought it was wise to defend his friend. Dumbass

I remember this fondly. I was in the middle of my last final exams at LSU. I was proud to be a Tiger that day.

I had to walk around the parade grounds that day, what an inconvenience.

Really, it's similar to the every other day anti Shah of Iran protests when I was in school. And if Schirmer was up on the box at freak speech alley at the same time, plan on a huge detour.
ETA: Irony is, back then the roles might very well be reversed, i.e., flag burner might be the hero, being supported by damn dirty hippies, and VN vet might be the one being ridiculed.

Can't pick when you're born, at least not to my knowledge, but still young at heart!

Reminds me of how commonplace flag burning and stuff like it were when I was going to school. Of course, I spent two years in Seattle and two in Santa Barbara, both the scenes of massive student riots, bank burnings, destruction of federal property, assaults on police and the National Guard, occupation of university and federal offices and all manner of mayhem. How times have changed.

I remember that like yesterday. There were some pretty radical Arabs / Muslims at LSU at the time.
I remember Schirmer, but also Brother Jed and Sister Cindy. What a hoot.

The "dirty hippie" Schirmer was a Vietnam vet, IIRC. Last I heard, he was living in Malibu, so he seems to have done alright for himself.
The kid I remember was the "Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade" guy. It turned out his father was the CEO of Gulf States Utilities

It is about time America put a stop to free speech.

I think he lived on State Street possibly in Tiger Manor. I would always see him skateboarding around there.
The dumbass grad student lived on Christian Street. They are both gone now, I think the grad student moved last semester.
This is what happens when you are a wannabe and trying too hard pretty much.

Didn't the army guy get in trouble for being out there yelling at him in his uniform or something?

There are youtubes of Jed speaking in formal settings. He's a very, very sharp guy. I disagree with pretty much everything he stands for, but I kinda respect him in a way.

I certainly hope he did!!!!!
I got into a number of arguments that day explaining how it is NOT proper for someone in uniform behave the way he did...

Why give the douche attention. If no one showed up he'd look even worse.
