A lot of modern leftist behavior here falls under "cootie theory", which you might remember from when you were in the 3rd and 4th grades.
Under that theory, racism is a contagion spread imperceptibly like cooties, and even if you don't exhibit symptoms you can be accused of carrying it, just like cooties.
Topher has been exposed to the racism cooties by playing the part of a racist, so he has to make some form of atonement, and make that atonement known to the public, lest he be accused of having the racism cooties.
If he didn't make this symbolic public atonement, which has no real meaning just like the cooties inoculation, he might be ostracized by the left, just like you were shunned if you had cooties.

I kind of get it. Some of these people get really into the character. If I had to "become" a huge racist and all the things that went along with that, I'd probably need to decompress too.
