If you can stay up till around 1245 to 2:00 AM, and the sky is clear, you may be able to see something very special tonight.

quote:

This spectacle will occur overnight Monday into Tuesday morning as Earth passes through debris from Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. On average, there could be four meteors per minute - and up to 1,000 per hour.

Spectacular New Tau Herculids Meteor Shower May Light Up the Skies Over North America

quote:

Astronomers are excited about the possibility of a new meteor shower on May 30-31, the tau Herculid shower, forecast to peak on the night of May 30 and early morning of May 31. Back in 1930, German observers Arnold Schwassmann and Arno Arthur Wachmann discovered a comet known as 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, or “SW3, which orbited the Sun every 5.4 years. Being so faint, SW3 wasn’t seen again until the late 1970s, seeming pretty normal until 1995, when astronomers realized the comet had become about 600 times brighter and went from a faint smudge to being visible with the naked eye during its passage. Upon further investigation, astronomers realized SW3 had shattered into several pieces, littering its own orbital trail with debris. By the time it passed our way again in 2006, it was in nearly 70 pieces, and has continued to fragment further since then.

I'll be staying up and taking long exposure photographs like this one to hopefully capture multiple meteors at once.

It's a new meteor shower, so we aren't really sure what to expect- whether it will be faint or visible. Good luck everyone!

ETA 1245 to 2:00 am if you are in CST

One of the most underrated activities I can think of. Doing this with the Skyguide app open will make me a raging nerd.

For instance, just last night I saw half dozen or so meteors. In between sightings, I noticed a redish planet/star and thought it might be Mars. A quick glance at the app told me it was Antares, the 15th brightest star in the earth's viewable sky. A star 10,000 times brighter than our Sun. Why doesn't it look brighter from earth? Well, its 550 light years away. So, the light I saw last night left that star twenty years before Columbus set sail for the new world/spring break in Lauderdale. That's some cool shite.

The Sky Guide app Makes astronomy a much easier hobby. Looking into space using that app and my telescope reminds me of the first time I looked through a microscope - into a different world. It's surreal.

In Louisiana, yes. I've seen a few in the mountains that were pretty good.

WAFB says mostly clear for BR. I set Skyguide for 2AM and Arcturus will be due west just above the horizon.

ETA: had the wrong meteor shower earlier.

Not cheap but perfect for beginners and more experienced people. I won't be using it tonight. Tonight I'll be taking a lot of 30 second exposure photos using an iPhone 13 pro on a simple phone tripod and a Bluetooth remote.
