The reason catholics abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent is because Christ shed His blood on Good Friday. The blood He shed for us is so precious that we do not wish to shed blood on that day during Lent, not even an animal; therefore, we do not eat meat on Friday so we do not shed blood on Friday.
The Season of Lent is to prepare ourselves for Christ's suffering, death, and Resurrection on Easter.
The 40 days of Lent also symbolizes the 40 days Christ fasted and prayed in the desert. We follow Christ's example and follow in His footsteps by making sacrifices during Lent. These sacrifices bring us closer to God and provide us strength to resist temptations. Abstaining from meat, but going to a seafood buffet defeats the purpose of the sacrificial love we should show Christ.
The goal of Lent is to be closer to God than before Lent began.
People who feel they do not need Lent to get closer to God, try to increase your prayer time, Bible reading time, silent time (10 minutes or longer to allow God a chance to speak to you), and sacrifices (abstain and/or fast on Fridays, give up watching tv one day per week, etc). See what happens to you. Try it.

I eat what I want and I don't give anything up.

If there is something in my life I need to give up I act like an adult and give it up.

I GAVE UP BEER FOR LENT! Drinking bourbon....

I will participate. I use the Fridays as a day of fasting with very small/basic meals that are meatless. Also giving up hot/warm showers. I feel like this will help me focus on what the season of lent is all about.

I don't participate, but I also don't mock the people who do. The pope is the anti Christ.

Catholic here.

We eat a lot of cheese pizza and fish sticks during lent at my house. Plus the occasional fish fry at the church.

False. Meat is defined for Catholics as living on land.

Lol, no.
Why be a part time Christian? Lead by example each and every day.
I'll never say, " hey, that guy's a good Christian, because I saw him eat fish on a Friday in March."

The point of Lent is not to prove your “Christianity” to anyone else.

The point of a small self sacrifice is simply a reminder to yourself someone else paid the ultimate sacrafice for you.

No one said the guy abstaining was a good Christian just because he abstained and to argue against that straw man is very short sighted.

Sure in theory, the catholic guy who does 100 other things, but eats meat on Lenten Fridays is a better catholic than the guy who does nothing else but actually abstains. In reality, the catholic guy who does 100 other things is most likely also abstaining from meat on Fridays in lent.

You could probably say good Catholics most likely abstain, but not all who abstain are good Catholics.

Exactly. Lent isn’t a time for grandstanding. It’s actually the complete opposite.

Many of my Catholic friends did not participate because in their opinion (and mine) it is a bit disingenuous. The whole I eat a turkey sandwich everyday for lunch, but I'm going to pick up a $18 shrimp poboy on Friday because I can't eat meat doesn't really sit right with me.

That's the thing. If you go eat crawfish or that big fried fish dinner, you're missing the point. With seafood being such a major part of the lifestyle in south Louisiana, giving up meat is not a big deal.

That's like the giant crawfish boil my in-laws used to do on Good Friday. Never understood that. Good Friday is the most somber day on the Catholic calendar, and they're throwing a party.

Eesh. Not only just the party aspect, but people 18-59 years of age aren’t supposed to have big meals that day or Ash Wednesday. One meal plus two smaller ones that when put together don’t equal one full meal. An all you can eat crawfish boil defeats the whole purpose.
