Fish bleed too. What's your lame excuse for that?
Catholic convert here. As with many of the guidelines, the meat on Fridays and fasting things are misconstrued.
Jesus sacrificed himself for our sins, replacing animal sacrifices, which were warm-blooded. Hence, no meat of warm-blooded animals on Fridays, in remembrance of Jesus' sacrifice. Mere abstinence from meat is not considered fasting.
The only lenten fasting days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, but many Catholics have a big ol' crawfish boil with beer on Good Friday, which is abstinence from meat but certainly not fasting and not all that conducive to remembrance of his sacrifice.

So is it land animals or warm blooded animals or shedding blood? Get your stories straight, you sinners.

I've lost count of the people that tell me I have something on my forehead. Several of them gave me a blank stare when I told them it's Ash Wednesday.

Honestly it's a bigger sacrifice for me to NOT eat seafood. I usually give up fried food which is extra difficult while I watch everyone enjoy their fish frys and poboys

It's a fasting thing.
The real truth is no one knows and beavers, muskrats, capybara and alligator count as fish so really it's all made up. Aquinas gives some insight as the flesh of beasts inspires lust and greed while we should hit up the wine and veggies since flatulent foods inspire spirituality.
The closest we got to a pope helping the fish industry is regional bishops declaring things fish and the anglicans being asked to fast with fish to help the english industry.

Are you saying Jesus wouldn't party with a crawfish boil?

Im catholic but I think it's absurd to not eat meat on a Friday but go pig out at an all you can eat seafood buffet instead during lent. So a person actually eats better instead of making a sacrifice. Not eating meat on a Friday used to actually be a sacrifice many years ago, now it's not.
