Let's say that the I-10/210 East and West interchanges are 12 miles apart and the more direct route by continuing on I-10 is 9 miles.

Would you drive an extra three miles, typically at 50>70 MPH to avoid the toll?

as long as my morning commute west on 210 @ 0530 and my evening commute from 10/210 east to Prein Lake is clear, I don't care.

I'm okay with a toll road as long as those that skip the toll pay for their crime, the project pays for itself in the long run, and there's some added safety benefit, ie the Causeway. You don't hear about pile ups on the causeway, they do a damn good job of convoying.

I will say that a toll on interstates is kinda screwed up. We already paid for that. But if money is the problem for building an I-10 bridge then toll it till the money is there. Of course the toll plaza isn't free. Louisiana can't do it. Let Texas collect it for us.

Use "Dynamic Tolling" (or customizable tolls) to identify locals and give them a more favorable rate than people just passing through. Another factor is rush-hour traffic vs non-rush hour and days of the week.

Virginia and Maryland do this a lot in the NCA, part of it is to encourage carpools as they're free.

I do it now without the toll just to avoid that shitty stretch of I-10.

Tolls went to good use. Quite a few years ago went to a New Year's party and heavy fog rolled in. Causeway police convoyed vehicles to the northshore without any problems. Accidents would have happened otherwise, since it was New Year's eve and we can't drive on the interstate during sunny days.

My issue with this on a widely travelled road would be the ones that send you a bill in the mail after travel through. Let’s say the toll was 2 dollars. They tack on an administrative fee and mail you a bill. Cost for the paper, printing and postage is about a dollar.

So now your 2 dollar toll is now 3 dollars.

The tolling authority now mails your bill.

You go to pay online, but there is a credit card processing charge of another dollar. Your 2 dollar toll is now 4 dollars, but let’s say it was mailed to an old address on file where your vehicle was registered or you forget to pay it. Your 2 dollar toll is now hit with a 25 dollar late fee, and the fees keep going up, until your registration comes times for renewal and you have to pay a few hundred to clear up that 2 dollar toll that you didn’t pay a year or two ago.

Sounds like a huge money racket for tolling authorities or toll collection agencies that make bank on administrative fees, late fees and processing charges.

Sounds like the US just sucks at tolling if that’s how it works. As soon as I go through any of the toll gates in UAE I get a notification on my phone if I’m not setup to pay that particular toll gate.

I-10 runs from California to Florida with ZERO tolls, as it should be. Its not a local road but rather a throughway for interstate commerce. It is paid for with a large chunk of FEDERAL dollars, i.e. tax payers across the country so that they can commute from state to state.

I have nothing against toll roads when they are used as an alternate route, not to replace THE route. Yeah you can take 210, but that is a loop intended for mainly locals and shouldn't be relied upon for interstate commerce amongst other states.

As "wealthy" as this country is and as much money as we piss away, it is truely sad that we are even having this discussion. We passed 1.2 trillion dollar Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act AND a 2.3 trillion dollar Build Back Better Act and yet we want to put a toll on I-10. GTFO.

Make both of them a toll to pay for the i-10 bridge twice as fast.

I agree with this.

In theory, the state should make 2-10 a toll road if they need help funding this project

Additional Gas/Diesel Tax
Additional State Sales Tax

Here are some other taxes, but it would be too burdensome since they come due all at once or would be complex to collect the correct tax: Registration Fees or a mileage tax. Neither would not generate enough. How do you calculate a mileage tax what if I travel to other states, why should I pay a tax on those miles? Then you create a cottage business like brake tags or another department to inspect and report the miles to the state. That is just as bad as collecting tolls. Tolls are good until you realize that significant percentage of tolls go to the business of toll collection.

It is just like the Feds spending 80 billion on IRS Agents to collect a few million in extra taxes.

I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck
"We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll"
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4"
