As a kid growing up in the late 60's and 70's, the old wisdom was to not discuss politics or religion. People still didn't care for the other side but it wasn't this life or death "sky screaming" tantrum throwing, protest every single day crap we're dealing with today.

Vietnam vets were spit on and called baby murderers. Many of these men were drafted and had no choice.

Politics have always been this divisive, or worse. Its just that more people have a voice now through social media.

If there was social media in 1800s, it would be much worse.

Conservative has nothing to do with tradition.

Conservative is supposed to mean less government in your life and more personal responsibility

We need to bring back dueling. An elegant solution from a more civilized age.

I think during the 80's & 90's it was divisive, but both sides could work together and pass bills that either side brought to the table. When W won in 2000, the left was really butt hurt from Gore losing. There was a good year or two of patriotism and working together after 9/11, but the mud slinging really picked up steam with the next election and John Kerry. After that, it was totally partisan when Pelosi and Harry Reid took control of congress.

Why did the media change?

24/7 cable news and social media that rewards clicks.

Plus, people are far more likely to engage with negative news than positive.

Between every idiot having a microphone in the form of Facebook/Twitter and the 24-7 media pushing opinions and encouraging tensions for their ratings, its only going to get worse.

Gone are the good old days when it was generally frowned upon to bring up politics in casual conversation.

Right. The media gives society what they want to consume.

It's why I don't blame media. They are whores, sure, but most of us are whores in some way.

I first became politically aware during Clinton's years. I never thought there was a more hated president by his enemies. Then came Bush. Then came Obama. And now Trump. Seems like the hate for each by their enemies just keeps growing.

Also, when someone was tagged with treason, we hung them. There was a guy close to my home town that was a part of the Lincoln assination. You can google that group and see a painting of the hanging scene. We didn't frick around.

Reagan. the left absolutely hated him, but didn't have social media to get organized.

We still assassinate people these days, it is just character assassination.

No, they haven't always been this divisive. The polarization of politics is scary and saddening to me because it means people are succumbing to binary partisan politics. Nobody is talking, working together, or trying to find better systems and ideas just because someone of another group suggests it.

Remember when we used to not vote out of apathy? Or get upset about someone's tie or color of suit? Yeah, I miss those days

as already pointed out, we had a civil war. We've had riots, marches, demonstrations, etc.
This is nothing new. Its just new to...you.

In general, harsh penalties helped keep political strife down.

The main issue today is access. Even in the 60's, while you had these turbulent times you also had the counterculture movements in which you could be oblivious to the politics of the day, or living in a nice suburb where there was little political division. That's damn near impossible now.

to me its akin to people that grew up in the 80s and 90s talking about how great and wonderful times were during their childhood

and they probably were in everyone's little bubble, but that doesn't change the fact that as country, the 80s and 90s were objectively the worst decades in our modern history
