I don't think sanity has anything to do with it. More like misjudgement most of the time. Women are usually talked into these things by their hairdressers. The hairdressers are often not as pretty as them and secretly want to level the playing field. The chick receiving the haircut also has a false sense of their own aesthetic value and figure short hair is easier to deal with, it feels better and guys will want to hit it anyway. The latter is VERY often a mistake. If a woman has one or two features or a head shape that isn't ideal for a short style, it can almost completely destroy her sexual attractiveness.

Petite thin girls (waif types) look great with short hair, IMO. More full figured girls need long or very thick hair to balance out.
I have found short haired girls to be generally more confident and less needy, so I reject the OP's premise.

It's just a haircut. Women like to experiment with their hair. One of the easiest ways for a woman to change the way they look...is to change their hair.
Some women can pull off very short hair. Problem is....you don't know if that is you until AFTER you get the haircut.

All of this. And it's just hair. It'll grow back. I've had plenty of hairstyles and thought, well, at least it will grow back.
I once cut off 12 inches of hair and donated it Locks of Love. I have several friends that have grown their hair out and then donated it. Again, it grows back.
