I was expecting to see a bunch of unused rental space and low-life losers
Indoor malls (especially in warmer climates) are being replaced by both online shopping and lifestyle developments like Town Center or Juban Crossing.
In Lafayette, Northgate is dead. Acadiana is still alive and will probably be okay for another decade or so.
In Baton Rouge, Cortana is dead and Mall of Louisiana is probably going to be the only indoor mall in that area.
Sears is a popular anchor for those properties and it is in serious trouble. Macy's is also struggling nationwide.

How many more years until mall of LA is in the same shape.....20?
Maybe, or maybe never... for whatever reason, certain malls seem to survive changing times and tastes, while others go by the wayside... Here in the New Orleans area, we have a place called Lakeside Mall that was popular when i was a kid in the 80s, and is still popular and thriving today... Then there is Esplanade Mall, which was the shiny new place in the mid 80s but has fallen into disrepair, and the Lake Forest Plaza, which was the Mall of Louisiana of its day, but is now either deserted or demolished... Not sure which category Mall of La. falls into, but time will tell.

I honestly haven't been to the Mall of LA in ~7 years. But last time I was there, you had undesirables starting to loiter. Not too bad yet, but you could tell it was becoming an issue. And on that last trip, there was a smash and grab at a jewelry store that had 90% of the mall sprinting towards the doors because they thought there were gun shots. Happened to be graduating around that time and moved from BR, so haven't been back. But that's the last thing that stuck in my mind. I realize that's anecdotal, but that's ultimately what slowly turns people away, their own experiences.

People still shop in stores?

Going to Cortana was fun. Spaceport, babbage's (then Electronic Boutique), Kay b toys.

Could they charge for parking at Mall or LA. They could validate with any purchase which would help with the loitering.

It must have been early, go about 5;30-6 o'clock . That when the thugs come out, it's packed.... nobody buying anything but it's packed
Dude, you are full of shite. I went there last week after work to the Gamestop to get my son a certain game he wanted and I saw maybe 10 people the entire time I was there. There were no thugs lurking around. Hell, there was nobody there. I didn't feel threatened or get robbed. It definitely is done as a mall and it is deserted, but don't make up this stupid shite like it's some kind of place where thugs meet up to wait for the unsuspecting white guy so they can rob him.

Bingo.
At one point my wife and I were talking about dawn of the dead.
That was the only weirdness to be seen.

It's really limited to Saturday. In the evening. It's pretty tame most of the time but Saturday after 5 it turns into urban see and be seen time.

Pretty cool video, the un-funny douche who was on camera notwithstanding. That Bon Marche' Mall jingle had been buried in the back of my mind for 40 years.
"Where it all started and never stopped".....LOL

I remember that huge-arse McDonald's in Bon Marche', along with the Woolworth store that had the lunch counter. And I think it had a Monkey Ward's....but I don't remember much else about Bon Marche'. My family graduated up to Cortana circa 1980.

I don't remember why we called it that.....maybe it was because my little sister couldn't say "Montgomery Ward's"? Or did everyone call it that?
I DO remember that it seemed like every time my parents bought something from there they had a problem with it. They hated that place and I think they quit shopping there after a while.
