Today I learned wifi calling on a plane is outlawed in the US, but not elsewhere... why?

Anyone have a good reason? It's not a safety or technical concern as far as I can tell.

I’m good with it. No one wants to shite by an idiot talking on the phone for 3 hours straight.

Do you want to be trapped in close quarters with people talking loudly on their phones?

A quick Google search would show that is the issue, since as you said the technical reason went away.

Some people don't care, some do. Right now more that do are on the board that decides it. I don't fly enough to care.

This seems easily mitigated to short duration calls and keeping the phone call quiet.

To your point sure there are always people who will abuse it, but to outright ban it seems OTT.

I just thought it strange the rest of the world has figured this out, but not the US.

It’s 100% peace of mind. When the FCC/FAA (don’t remember which) opened to public comments on allowing it the response was resoundingly negative. So it stayed banned.

A plane full of people talking loudly on phones would be miserable.

I wouldn’t want to sit by them either.

People already lose their shite on the reg when flying. Let people make calls, especially the group who put the call on speaker or FaceTime and yell, and there would be daily brawl videos from planes that would make Popeyes look like amateur hour.

Yeah, your Spirit flyers are generally quiet, respectable, classy people.

Would never happen. People are obnoxious and rude.

It’s one of the few windows of time remaining where you can still get away with not having to instantly respond to or be in contact with the outside world, and don’t need a made up excuse for being so. I hate people who clamor to close all such windows. Hate them.

Yeah, on top of that being impossible to enforce, I can’t possibly see that turning into a racial issue for flight crews.

People already wear pajamas and bring turkeys on to planes. Next thing you know you'll be sitting by someone talking on speakerphone for three hours.

And who is going to police that?

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should. Send texts or FB messages like the rest of us. If you’re that important and just have to make calls while in the air, then you should be flying privately.

Exactly. With all the stupid restrictions when flying, I can fully support this one. We live in a world of clueless entitlement, where people in general have no situational awareness or common courtesy. It’s bad enough that people at the gate already come sit next to me, turn the volume to 11, and put it on speaker or facetime. At least there, I can get up and walk away. I’d lose my mind having to sit next to that for a 3 hour flight.

But it was ok when planes had phones built into seat backs?

Airlines probably lobbied FOR it when they were making money off of those phones. Also I would guess that people were probably much briefer in those phones (I guess you payed by minute) than they would be on an unlimited app such as WhatsApp.
