I would venture to say even people with mental disorders at least take a moment and wonder how it will affect their loved ones.

Choosing the other path is still selfish. Disorder or not.

I’m not so sure that is a 100% factual.

GeorgeTheGreek,

All bullshite aside. Can you please explain to me how people who commit suicide are selfish? Honestly, I don't see it and if you could enlighten me that would be great.

Facts About Mental Illness and Suicide

The great majority of people who experience a mental illness do not die by suicide.  However, of those who die from suicide, more than 90 percent have a diagnosable mental disorder.

People who die by suicide are frequently experiencing undiagnosed, undertreated, or untreated depression.

Worldwide, suicide is among the three leading causes of death among people aged 15 to 44.

An estimated 2-15 % of persons who have been diagnosed with major depression die by suicide. Suicide risk is highest in depressed individuals who feel hopeless about the future, those who have just been discharged from the hospital, those who have a family history of suicide and those who have made a suicide attempt in the past.An estimated 3-20% of persons who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder die by suicide. Hopelessness, recent hospital discharge, family history, and prior suicide attempts all raise the risk of suicide in these individuals. An estimated 6-15% of persons diagnosed with schizophrenia die by suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of premature death in those diagnosed with schizophrenia. Between 75 and 95% of these individuals are male. Also at high risk are individuals who suffer from depression at the same time as another mental illness. Specifically, the presence of substance abuse, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder put those with depression at greater risk for suicide.People with personality disorders are approximately three times as likely to die by suicide than those without. Between 25 and 50% of these individuals also have a substance abuse disorder or major depressive disorder.

If you can’t see my point of view at all, then I can’t help you. I understand your side. There’s a disorder and they aren’t thinking straight.

My side is there are moments of clarity and typically moments where they chose the path of suicide instead of help.

if you are talking about those dealing with mental illness then no, there are zero moments of clarity. They are way past that point and think they have no other option.

Because people who commit suicide are thinking about themselves and their feelings and not considering how others feel about them or how others may need them. Mom killed herself Mother's Day this year.

Impotence and transvestitism are disorders.

Many are mentally ill, many make poor choices and suffer short term but choose a long term solution. I've known plenty of both, and regardless it has a profoundly negative affect on those left behind.

you're wasting your time...there are people in this thread who think they have an understanding of a topic which you cannot possibly grasp unless you have direct experience with it...a person who has never experienced suicidal ideation can not possibly understand what it is like.

you are right.. ive said my part. I used to think like they are until i got into the mental health field almost 8 years ago and it has been a big eye opener for me. There are some sick sick people out there that need help, and rather its the stigma that comes with it they are ashamed to seek help, or they are to the point they dont think they need any help.. it starts to get very scary. I cant even begin to tell you the things i have seen over the past several years. Stuff that breaks your heart. The mind is a very tricky thing and one little imbalance can mess your world up

They often consider themselves a burden to their family and friends, and see suicide as a way to free them from that burden.

In my darkest time, when my daughter was near death and I was in absolute torment, I thought of Suicide. I don’t know if I’d have gone through with it. Probably not. But I do understand the anguish that can drive a person to do it. The glib “Suicide is selfish” meme is a standard trope wheeled out by people who’ve been fortunate enough to never been in such despair that they’d even considered the need to escape existence.

Can not be overstated.

Can you imagine the pain and torment you’d have to be experiencing to choose that death is better than life...?

What a bunch of fricking selfish, holier-than-thou retards posting in here.

Suicide is everybody's right and no living human has the right to challenge that.

Bringing religion into it is especially stupid and selfish.

If you are too stupid, weak and cowardly to understand suicide then shut the frick up and don't try to put your own sick perversions onto another human.

frick you with all of the powers at my disposal!!!

If people who are in that dark of a place that they don’t feel like anyone loves them enough to help them then why should they care about how it will affect someone that they don’t believe cares about them? You know you care, but obviously not enough to have built a relationship that made them know without a Shadow of a doubt that you were there for them no matter how bad it gets?
