Looking for advice.. I use
Nice yellow bottom… heavy for the size..

I like to cut them open at the store and select the best one.

I used to have good luck knocking on it and if it sounded hollow, it was usually good.

Thump test always works for me. There is a certain sound they make when I thump them that I know it’s a good one.

All the bans. But being from Louisiana I know who to go to, to find a good watermelon, cook good cornbread, and I’m gonna say it, albeit controversial, make killer red beans & rice.
We all know.

Finding a good watermelon these days is nearly impossible. I've just about given up buying them from a store. There are a couple of folks at the farmer's market that usually have good ones. If I can't get one of their's I usually just pass on watermelon.

I usually ask my friend to try their finest sample. He’s been around for a while.

A large yellow portion on the watermelon always works for me. I was taught this my an old watermelon farmer.
Basically means it was on the ground long enough to ripen.

Yeah but I might have sat long enough to over-ripen and be soggy and rotten inside
My failsafe way of buying watermelon is using the yellow spot and also thumping it. And last but not least, buying 3 at a time. One is bound to be good

Have you seen watermelon prices recently?

This seems like something Kige would make a YouTube on.

“might have sat long enough to over-ripen and be soggy”
This is why I started the thread …my yellow spot and heavy usually works .. but just cut one I thought was going to be great and is on verge of mealy ..I think it was to heavy and over ripened .
Got to eat it fast and use for smoothies..
I need to add the thumping technique.. but I never really understood what I was listening for.. that second post with the dull versus shiny comment looks promising .. I have noticed that but never identified it as a picking technique.
