I always enjoyed having the news on but on mute

I like to have the tv on for background noise, but I leave mine on sports talk all day. But sometimes I find myself hearing something and start paying more attention to what is being discussed so then I have to mute it for a little while.

In all seriousness, put some black tape on your laptop's webcam and microphone. Not for exactly this reason, but also definitely for exactly this reason.

Unless you’re working directly on/with people, most jobs could be done from home. The 8-5 workday is antiquated and unnecessary.

I find I get the most work done first thing in the morning. If you can configure your tasks appropriately, getting started at 5 AM can be really helpful.

There are days when I can get more done in the 5AM-9AM time frame than I would ever get done in a typical workday. Lack of interruptions really facilitates that.

The days that suck are the ones with back to back GoToMeetings or Skype calls. They are just as unproductive as in person meetings.

I work from home, but have learned to dress for work, even when I'm just going to my office.

Had to d a webinar once with webcam, and had forgotten to shower that morning.

WFH, IMO has to be done a certain way to be effective.

Do everything you usually do, shower, normal work clothes or close to it, start time, etc. establish a work environment.

Don’t jerk off.

Too much.

Would also recommend still making the effort to shower and change into "work clothes" to retain a productive mindset.
This has always been my biggest thing. Have a dedicated work space, get showered and dressed like you are going to work, sit down at your desk, and work. If you slip into working from the couch in your PJs, you will find everything in your house to be a much bigger distraction.

10 years exclusively working at home....here are some things I've learned.

1. Set rules with the people living in your home that your work space is your work work space. You're not to be interrupted unless it's an absolute emergency.

2. You have to force yourself out of the house every day or every other day. Even just to run up to a gas station or something, you have to resist becoming a complete homebody.

3. Use Netflix or Prime to binge some shows during slower work times to keep the clock moving a bit quicker. Don't watch something like Narcos where there are subtitles or something you get absorbed into like Breaking Bad, but shite like Workaholics, Always Sunny, Dexter, etc.

4. Get yourself a bit of a morning routine you go through before logging on...check the Twitter, coffee, maybe whip up a quick bite in the kitchen, just spend at least 30 minutes occupying yourself with something other than work before logging on.

5. frick getting dressed. My uniform is sweatpants and a t-shirt. These people telling you to get dressed like you're headed into the office are off their rockers....that's stupid. It's easier to work when comfortable.

6. Make your work space as functional and comfortable as possible. If you have a bedroom dedicated to being an office, dress it up as if it were a nice corner office at HQ. Segregating work and your home are important, even if they're both in the same physical location.

I don’t get dressed for the office, but I do get showered and out of my PJs. I agree that it’s easier to work when comfortable, but I think there’s such a thing as “too comfortable”

This is very important.
