re: tips for day sleeping (night shift)

When I first started working shift work I'd use a small tabletop fan to create a "white noise" in my room. Definitely get black out curtains too. I don't get home from night shift till almost 8 so getting to sleep before the sun comes up is impossible for me.
Doors closed. Curtains closed. Ceiling fan and table fan going. I'm out!

I've worked nights for 15 years. Like others have said...get an eye mask. Much cheaper and more convenient than blackout shades. Although...if you have been staying in a hotel....they usually have good thick drapes that should block out any light.
Does Benadryl make you sleepy? I sometimes take Benadryl to help me sleep. I was gonna try melatonin...but was told that only helps you fall asleep...not stay asleep(which was my issue as well). I was told to try tryptophan supplements to stay asleep. Those helped as well.
As someone else said...no caffeine after 2-3 am if you are getting off around 6-7.

When I was overseas on a fob and I worked nights, Xanax worked for me. Super hard sleeping with steamrollers, MWRAPs, Apaches, and the daily rocket attacks.

Get a convex sleep mask. It looks like a padded bra for you eyes, but if you can get past that, its really great. I can sleep hours in the middle of the day, if my work schedule gets wacky.
Also, as mentioned, a white noise machine is nice too.

Agreed. I just bought one of these a couple weeks ago(always used a flat sleep mask before). Much more comfortable and stays on my face the entire time I sleep.

Black out curtains and ear plugs

Some really bad advice in here, but typical of the OT. To the people saying eat a large meal, do you do that at night right before bed? To the people saying take a hot shower, wrong again. Exercising? All terrible. You don't want to do any of those things within an hour of sleep. Here's some things to try and help Flanders.
A. Put on sunglasses asap when driving home from work in the morning. The sun will wake you up.
B. Melatonin only tells your body it's dark outside. So instead of 10mg at bed time, take 5mg at 2am, then 5mg at bedtime.
C. Get off the phone/laptop. It's artificial sunlight and can keep you awake. So much so that when I work nights and get tired I'll immediately pull out my phone to wake up.
D. Get the room as dark as possible.
E. Get the room to 66 degrees if possible. It's the perfect temp for sleep.
F. Jerk it. Guaranteed to knock you out with everything else I told you to do.

Yeah showers wake me up. So I only shower right after work if I took care of some patients with some really nasty germs.

Exercising?
No way I could do that either right after work. I'll be too tired to get an effective workout...and then the exercise will end up at some point waking me up more....making it more difficult to go to sleep.

20 years of night shifts here.
Your problem is getting off at six & being asleep by eight. You normally wouldn't knock off at 5pm and be in bed sleeping by 7pm, night shift isn't any different.

Work out after shift, zquil, and black out curtains.

Yeah yeah, what JJ27 said and also eat a big meal before bed and after exercising. May need a warm shower in there as well.

buy a small box fan. That will help with the noise and get air circulation. The lack of consistent air movement sometimes effects sleep

Yeah but it can depend on what kind of hours you are working. Working 12 hour shifts....you know there isn't much time you have off until you go back to work. Also...it can depend on if you want to sleep until right before you need to leave for work...or if you want to get up and have time to possibly work out or just relax a little. I always preferred to go straight to sleep as soon as I could when I got home(got home at 8 am...asleep by 8:30). Then wake up 2-2:30 and have enough time to work out, shower, get ready, eat, and possibly catch up on my shows I missed on my DVR before having to go back to work(I have to leave my house at 6pm).
When you work back to back 12s for several shifts in a row...you begin to hate the feeling that all you do is work, sleep, shower, eat, repeat. Sometimes sacrificing a little sleep to feel like you have time for other stuff is worth it for your sanity.

Why should I tip someone for sleeping when I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself!

Yea that'll do it! May get you fired in the process but you will sleep like a baby.

There is part of your problem. Take 25-30mg.
I have to take 30mg AND 45ml of zzzquil to fall asleep some nights. That still barely works.
