I tried to get the tab but the lady hosting us had pre-arranged to pay it, I asked if I could at least leave a gratuity, she said it's not expected, the servers are paid well, and in some cases they are offended by an offered tip, never saw the tab bbut I'll bet that dinner was close to a thousand Euros
"servers are paid well".

So, the servers were paid/tipped at a price that was built into the cost of the meal.

That is NOT better than in the US where you have the option to tip as much or as little as you want.

I disagree but that doesn't matter, just got back from over there and I thought everything was reasonably priced, servers were all competent, literate, extremely polite, and good at their job, pretty much the opposite of here

You said the servers are paid really well. It's no big secret that when someone is paid really well then more times than not you get their best. This goes for all jobs.

To add on: When you go to nicer restaurants in the US where the servers are tipped "really well", you get their best as well.

I repeated what our host told me, server jobs are different in most places abroad, it's not treated as a part time gig for students or a second job to pick up a few extra bucks

The problem in the US is that it is all based on a percent of the bill. Let's say I go to a restaurant and I am extremely thirsty. I order soft drink that costs $3 and get 3 refills throughout the meal. That means the waiter had to bring me 4 drinks. My wife orders 1 $6 beer. The waiter did 4 times the work for me than my wife but will make double the tip off my wife's order.

That's obviously a very basic example, but it just doesn't make sense.

I Always tip the maids at least a minimum of $5 a day even if my room does not get cleaned every day. I don't want them scrubbing the commode with my toothbrush.

Your client or your company paid. What's that got to do with your broke arse not leaving less than the cost of a beer at the bar for someone to strip your sheets and clean your toilet?

WHY DO WE HAVE TO TIP AND INSTEAD OF BEING BAKED IN TO THE COST OF THE HOTEL NIGHT!

Whatever they are getting paid is what they’re getting paid to strip sheets and clean toilets.

The real screwing begins when the hotel tax is applied to your bill.

The screwing is extra special when you discover one of the taxes is going to pay for a stadium bond for a pro football team.

Nobody should ever for tip for carry out. Five Guys is ridiculous asking for a tip for literally only cooking your food

I learned a great lesson from Reggie Fountain once, we pulled up to Joe's Stone Crab during the Miami boat show, there was a mob of people out front, hours long wait, they opened the car door, and as we hit the front door in stride they called out his name "Mr Fountain your table is ready". Every single employee greeted him as we walked through, I thought it was magic, then as we left that night he gave a $20 handshake to every single employee he passed on the way out. If you want to be a regular at the hotest spot in town, you just need to be a little bit generous.

Past few years my wife and I have to take my son to see a couple of doctors 3 hours away around 8-10 times per year, we stay in the same 5 star hotel every time and I throw a 20 at every employee I see, front desk, valet, bellman, everybody.

Every employee there knows my entire family, they treat my kids like royalty the entire stay, go out of their way to provide great service. My wife once asked the front desk about a type of cookie they removed from the room service menu, they confirmed they no longer offered them, 20 minutes later there was a fresh batch in my room at no charge.

To me its a small investment. It makes a trip thats not very pleasant for my family and especially my son less stressful and pleasant.

If you're staying at the Hampton Inn by the highway for 1 night, using a digital checkin, frick those lazy bastards I wouldn't tip them either, but if you're staying somewhere nice, and especially if you're gonna be coming back, be generous to the poor bastards who spend 80% of their time getting bitched at over trivial crap they don't control.

Honesty it's one of the most overrated things there is.

A wall of beer. A card to scan. You pour your own beer. Unless you do this all the time, you probably pour a shitty foamy beer with no recourse. Once you hit 36 oz you get cut off and have to go ask someone for more access on your card.

Absolutely.

Why pay more to have a $25 steak carried out to you when it's the same work as carrying out a $10 steak?

Reminds me of a time my buds and I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This was years ago before the whole city went to shite.

After the night was done we thought we'd go to Cafe du Monde for some beignets. To our astonishment there was a line out the door waiting to get in.

One of my buddies called over a server, handed him/her a $20 bill and he/she walked us all right past everyone in that line and sat us at a table.

Now the Coy beer we bought on Bourbon Street. That's a story for another time.

I’m sorry to hear about your son. It sounds like you’re very thoughtful and caring and hopefully your family, friends, and those you bless appreciate you.

I don’t get to stay at 5 star hotels ever, especially not on work trips where I have to justify my expenses with limits that have already been bargained.

Your experience sounds like one you invest in because you want a return that is enjoyable experience for everyone and I think all of that sounds perfectly reasonable. My usual experience is out of my room at 5 am and then back to my room around 8. I just want to sleep and get ready to do it all over again everyday for 14-21 days at a time.

Got into my hotel last night and there’s a placard with a q code to tip members of the hotel staff. I just got here, checked in on my phone, have a digital key and went to my room. No one has even helped me with anything yet. WTF

To be fair, hotels get a lot of requests to change bills for tips- this just supports it cashless

Staff gets a few more bucks because it’s easy. Team gets freed up from helping change bills and can do other things

You get to complain about a convenient option

It’s a money grab by the owners most of the time. I ask if they get tips most of the time the staff doesn’t.

I don't understand people who do this. I never have and never will. That's nonsense and throwing away money.
