A lot of people don't SING the national anthem. So in some respects this is much ado about nothing. However, if her refusal to do so is out of some sort of protest, then, like the others, her logic is asinine in light of the fact she is PLAYING for the United States of America.

quote:

While she will still represent the U.S. in their effort to win another World Cup, Rapinoe called herself a “walking protest” she believes the Trump administration doesn’t “value all American equally.”

“I feel like it's kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,” Rapinoe told the website. “Because I'm as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don't get to tell me if I can be here or not. So it's kind of a good ‘F you' to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the administration might have towards people who don't look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary. Ahh, disturbing.”

Is the Trump administration telling her she can't play soccer? I doubt of all the fricks Trump has to give that any are reserved for the women's soccer team.

Their gripe comes from the fact she and her teammates can't understand simple economics and market value. She doesn't REALLY want ACTUAL "equality." Because actual equality would mean simply ONE USNT. One where all men and women are equally eligible to be a part of the team based SOLELY on ability.

The women's team has generated more revenue than the men's team in recent years, yet the men get a larger share of the pie.

Untrue statement. Women's team generated more revenue in 2015 because of the Women's World Cup, the year after the Men's World Cup where there are few Men's international games.

I wouldn't expect you to do your research, but women actually get a higher percentage of the revenue that's generated by their respective world cups.

quote:

This years figures have not been released, but four years ago the Women's World Cup brought in almost $73 million. The 2010 Men's World Cup in South Africa made almost $4 billion. Those players got $348 million, or 9 percent of the total revenue. The women's team got a higher percentage with 13 percent, but the bottom line was still much less, $10 million

I'd like to see your evidence for this claim.

I did, and I see now I didn't notice the date of the article I read that stated it - it was from 2016 soon after the Women's World Cup win. So that would make sense. My mistake.

And the lawsuit is about base pay from the US Soccer Federation, not the share of the World Cup winnings, so not sure what a linked opinion column that points out the World Cup winnings percentages has to do with that. If the men were worth a crap and could win the World Cup, not to even mention just qualifying for the damn tournament, the numbers would likely skew the other way because of bonuses.

Yea, that one time we've missed the tournament since 1990 is really holding the team back.

She still starts most games, so far from a washed up team mom though she is getting up there in age. Maybe you're thinking of Abby Wombach? She retired a few years ago.

It's a little silly to act like the men winning the World Cup and the women winning the Women's World Cup are similar challenges, isn't it?

Going forward winning the women's WC will increase in significance, but they're a long way from comparable.

If she doesn’t want to stand, just tell her to stay in the locker room till the anthem is over. No need to even give her a platform to push her dumb agenda.

It’s one thing to do this in a specific sports league the NFL or NBA when you’re playing for a particular franchise. But to protest America, while that very same country is giving you the opportunity, without prejudice or hesitation, to play for it is absolutely disgraceful. But hey, let’s tell her how “brave” she is.

You do not understand. First, that article mentions nothing about “winnings.” It’s revenue. I.e how much did the men’s and women’s teams make for the US soccer federation. That is relevant because professional athletes are paid based on what they are worth. The men bring in an enormously larger amount of revenue. They are worth more as players. It’s really that simple. The argument she and you are making is flawed and does not have a chance in the lawsuit.
