TIL that 'uhh' in Mandarin sounds like the n-word

Was in a conference call earlier today with some Taiwanese clients and they kept on saying what sounded like the n-word. Turns out nei-ga is the Mandarin equivalent to ummm. A black colleague on the call was getting heated but he was all good after a quick Google check. Talk about lost in translation.

Was it fluffy that did a bit on that? Where some Chinese guy, (in China) was saying “neega neega neega” while trying to figure out what he wanted at McDonald’s and some African lady said “why don’t you hit him”?

No it isn’t...“nei-ge” translates roughly to “That” or “that there”

Nage or Naige is what they’re hearing, which means “that”, so yeah they use that word quite a bit.

I graduated from Feng Chia University in TaiChung, Taiwan (2.5 years post graduate degree in Mandarin)...but I suppose you are the expert because Google said so.

They aren’t white, and they’re not putting the hard “r” on the end. What’s the problem?

Mainland dialect will usually add the “R” sound to some phrases...Example...Yi di er (ee-dee-are), whereas in Taiwan it would be yi dian (ee-dee-en).......both phrases mean “a little bit”...just differing dialect.

Oh, and to the OP, do you want to know how to say uhhh in Mandarin? It’s “Uhhh” just like it is in every other language.
