That Qataris might be on the down low is not surprising anyone; that the Aggies take it and beg for more, isn't either.

Supporting a country that spends billions undermining what makes this country great, not shocking coming from you.

In Qatar the people don’t like the flintstones but the people in Abu Dhabi do!!!

Article from over a year ago is about A&M closing it despite the renewed contract. They are not the only one there, but I think it’s the right decision. U of Texas has or had some big ties with China including a lot of students coming over, and if still ongoing I hope Texas is reevaluating that.
What changed it was the October 2023 attacks on Israel and Qatar’s ties to hamas coming up multiple times which all led to vote to shut it down towards beginning of 2024. The state of Texas also adopted some strong measures for anyone wanting to divest from Israel or boycott it.
Maybe there is some truth behind sharing of sensitive weapons data which I am sure was a goal of Qatar to get one way or the other including bribing professors, but I don’t know anything on the source of that report. Feels like these universities setting up campus in Middle East lose more control of campus and situation than they anticipate at the beginning.

Cutting Off Qatar
Texas A&M’s Board of Regents voted to shutter its long-standing, hugely profitable branch campus in the Gulf country

TAMU Qatar is just one of many American branch campuses that make up Education City, the “multiversity” in Qatar that also includes branches of Virginia Commonwealth, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern Universities and Cornell’s Weill School of Medicine. TAMU Qatar, opened in 2003, was one of Education City’s first tenants.

Long compared TAMU Qatar’s closure to Florida International University’s decision earlier this year to end its partnerships in China—including a highly successful branch campus in Tianjin. In Florida, as in Texas, he suspects conservative politics played a decisive role.

just a few weeks ago, Baylor College of Medicine, another Texas-based institution—albeit a private one—announced it was opening a branch campus in Dubai.

All colleges are on their way to being nothing but brands that franchise themselves like a mall store for teenaged girls. And the richer ones are basically hedge funds now.

Baylor opening a medical school in the UAE is nowhere near the level of the Qatar partnerships. Qatar is recruiting and funding all kinds of engineering, technical, computer, and scientific research, and Qatar has ties with a lot of shady “political”organizations and countries.
Qatar tries to claim they are neutral, and that’s why they associate with groups like Hamas and have close ties to Iran. Sometimes it’s useful to use Qatar as intermediaries or sources of information, but Qatar has their own agenda. They buy, sell, and trade information and favors. They do not need to be anywhere near technical or scientific research.

A recurring theme on this board. We had some guys posting "surprising facts" about Russian nukes that have been true for half a century.
