Actually 5 people dying in 5 years seems like a lot to me....for a business which includes floating down a shallow river in a tube

Something should or could be done, and it could definitely start with some upkeep of the river

IF tiki really is making "millions," invest some back in the community and specifically the waterway you are destroying in the name of profit

The answer to "can you swim" is either yes or no, not kinda.
Maybe he meant that he could swim so long as he was in water shallow enough for him to stand-up in.

ETA: Frankly, I don't understand how so many people in southern Louisiana can't swim as adults. You're practically surrounded by water, and will spend a substantial amount of time in it for 3 months out of the year if you're smart. Just blows me away.

The kid straight up thought, "Well, I can't swim, so let's jump into this water that I need to swim in". Darwin candidate

Poor people who dont have access to swimming pools and who have parents that cant swim either is why there are so many that cant swim.

I know. If I couldn't swim and I fell in a body of water, I'd freak out, which would result in moving my arms and legs.. therefore, swimming.

Safety course? It's a fricking tube man. People need to get their heads out of their asses and take responsibility for their own actions. TT didn't take a gun, put it to these peoples heads, laugh manically, and drown them. I know it's scary that a couple of simple mistakes can and will kill you, but that's life. Do you have to watch a video about how dangerous dryers are before you buy one? Hell, you leave enough lint in those suckers, it will go up in flames.

agreed...

but at the same time, if you arent tall enough you cant ride the roller coaster you cant can you? maybe TT should at least ask on their waiver "can your dumbass swim?" it seems like over the last few years they have been getting alot more inner city clientele who cant swim

Do you not think that this is exactly what drowning people do?

Spastic and uncontrolled bodily movements in a state of severe panic do not result in one successfully keeping their head above water. Just moving your limbs isn't enough.

Yea but most swimming instructors are not giving lessons in the LSU lakes. Not to make fun. Its a serious issue but in the case of the drownings on the Amite it may not have mattered if they were strong swimmers or not. Either way you should not go tubing if you cant swim

I didn't take flying lessons, so I don't try to fly planes.

Somewhere in this thread the claim was made....but irregardless of the actual numbers the profit must be significant enough to warrant some reinvestment in the river

I mean, the parish could amend their riparian rights and require some sort of trash abatement or something

This just seems silly to me....to just toss a bunch of tubes in the river....make a killing...and not take any responsibility?

When I was a lifeguard at the Y in the mid 90s, there was a program where dozens of inner-city kids would come 2-3 times per week in the summer, and we gave them all free swimming lessons. They were always surprised at how easy it was once they quit freaking out. I guess my point is that there are resources, but the parents have to care enough to seek them out.

When in all actuality, if they would just ease back, they would float. It boggles the mind.

Not really.

If you've never learned to swim and you are in an area where you cannot touch the bottom, the brain panics, which is obviously not good in the water.

That being said, it cannot be overstated how idiotic it is to take a tubing trip on a river, without a lifejacket and without the ability to swim.

Assume nothing. Make everyone wear life jackets. Problem solved.
