I still think that if they are making money exclusively off of the river, they should be required to do a certain amount of upkeep. They are the reason for most of the beer cans and trash along that part.

I don't like politics one bit, but I think this would be a perfect situation for the city/parish to flex their muscle on TT

About? How is it "about" 5 people died?

“That’s a safety issue — regardless if you think you can swim like a fish,” Phillip H. White Sr. said

This is from the advocate article. Yes this is tragic and I feel for the families and victims. But no this is retarded. Just because his son couldn't swim he wants everyone to wear one. Its a go on your own risk type activity. Maybe he should have taught his boy how to swim.

Where's the personal accountability? If you can't swim then you shouldn't voluntarily go on a river. Also, 5 deaths over 5 years is a pretty a small number IMO when you consider the thousands of people that make the trip every year. Tiki provides a service and in no way should be responsible with the exception of times when the river is deemed unsafe by the local authorities. This is a sad story no doubt, but most of the incidents seem to involve bad decision making rather than any inherent risk associated with the river, and even then accidents happen.

He said "he could swim a little" i call bs its all about laying off the blame on a faulty inner tube and someone else. I am sorry your son was 26 and should be responsible for his own safety.

Safety course? It's a fricking tube man. People need to get their heads out of their asses and take responsibility for their own actions. TT didn't take a gun, put it to these peoples heads, laugh manically, and drown them. I know it's scary that a couple of simple mistakes can and will kill you, but that's life. Do you have to watch a video about how dangerous dryers are before you buy one? Hell, you leave enough lint in those suckers, it will go up in flames.

A sign stating "if you can't swim or can swim just a little bit, you must wear a life jacket" should suffice.

That had me shaking my head. The answer to "can you swim" is either yes or no, not kinda. If you can't swim, take precautions when the only thing between you and a river is an inner tube.

I'm really just confused by all these adults who can't swim. I mean, I totally get that the river currents can kill swimmers and non-swimmers alike, but what's with it being stated that these people can't swim?

Who is an adult and can't swim?

Do they just avoid the deep end at pools? Weird.
