What could have just been a dead dog turned into a 3 person casualty...AND a dead dog

After the first guy jumped in with no way to get out, what on earth possessed the other two to just jump in? A midnight swim? Who did they think was going to get them out?

It's just bizarre and so easily avoidable.

Well...that's that.

because of exhaustion from treading water and eventually drowning?

...that makes no sense.

Unless the water was under 60 degrees or so.

Even then you'd have hours before hypothermia gets you.

Edit. Hydrogen sulfide. They probably went to sleep and didn't feel it.

Old cisterns are terrifying. In high school we went to explore this abandoned early 1800s mansion that was supposedly haunted. I almost fell into one of those, apparently it had 2 large cisterns that collected rainwater from the house and could be pumped through the house. House had running water in the early 1800s which was very rare. I remember I happened to look down right before I stepped in, it shook me up. Those things had to be 30 feet deep one was half full of water and the other dry. You could see dead critters floating in there.

Terrifying way to die trapped in something like that.

This was it

Cool house though

You can see the 2nd cistern in the yard here

Sadly it burned down. 2 ft thick brick walls, place was built like a fricking fortress. The hand carved moldings and stuff in that house was gorgeous, Shame it wasn’t kept up

So I'm envisioning that they fell into the cistren and could not reach the entry hole because the gap between the surface of the water and the hole near the ground was too high for them to reach

Yea old cisterns are dangerous. Tiny hole leading to a 20-30 feet deep tank

Think one of these but underground

Nope he’s right. A first responder from a texas hunting forum said they were trespassing and had been run off another piece of property nearby.

Lots of people in So Louisiana know that going into closed spaces like cisterns, manholes, storage tanks and even compartments in ships is suicide without the right safety gear and ventilation. There may be no oxygen or something deadly like H2S. Many tragedies happen when people try to rescue the 1st guy.

Haven't scrolled through the 3 pages so far. Having said that. Its hard to believe that at least one of the TD frick bois hasn't mentioned,"Darwin".

I truly hope I'm wrong. It would help me keep some faith in humanity.

I love dogs as much as the next person. But I'm not going to kill myself trying to save one.

Well I wouldn’t wish injury or death in anyone doing this, none of these folks families better stoop so low as to try and sue the landowner over this

In Louisiana a property owner cannot be held liable if someone is hurt trespassing recreationally- unless something has changed since 20 yrs ago when a friend was cleared on this

Where does it say that?

Just curious because I’ve never come across that rule.

I’m not agreeing with what they did, because it seems they didn’t have a well thought out planned rescue of the dog before jumping in. The reason 3 people and the dog died.

Personally I’m going in after my dog. I’m going to die eventually, rather it be trying to rescue something, not shitting myself on the couch at 86. Everyone’s different though.

A little bit of natural instinct, a little bit of stupidity. Mostly panic.

You ever watched someone die? You would understand the natural feeling to go after them.
