I lived in Hawaii for 3 years and hated those damn tsunami alerts. They were scary and annoying.

From a New Zealand site, massive response at 2:14 am local time with people reporting what they felt. Also, evacuations called for because of the proximity to the quake.

Local comments are good, too.

I'm surprised Saint Jacinda was unable to prevent this.

New notice:

We have issued a TSUNAMI WARNING for New Zealand coastal areas following the magnitude 8.1 earthquake near KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION. There is a LAND and MARINE TSUNAMI THREAT. An EMA will be issued to areas under land and marine tsunami threat.

They must think there is a significant tsunami threat.

Why does it seem like every time they issues a tsunami warning nothing happens but when one actually hits, there is no warning?

Not saying this is the case this time.

The last major tsunamis, the 2011 Japan and 2004 Indonesia one, did have tsunami warnings.
Don't be like those in the media who always cry after tornadoes, etc. that they hit " without warning", when they always do. May not be but a handful of minutes, but they are warned as soon ad it can he.

Maybe the time between warning and event was so quick that there didn't seem like one.

Or maybe it was just a long damn time ago and I forgot
