Its a cost benefit decision, thib.
This is nothing more than bluster to appeal to citizens that think this is good action because it stops improper benefits. It's going to cost money to go get this money, and they'll be lucky to break even on the effort.
We haven't even discussed the opportunity cost.
Six million dollars. Pffft; call Raytheon or Lockheed and ask for a better deal on the next superfluous war machine we purchase.

How much do you think it costs them to mail 900 families saying they need to send the money back? I bet it's not $6 million

Yeah, that's how it works. They just shoot out the invoice and the money starts rolling in.

Word. I talked to some people who worked at the BP facility in Houma when they were taking claims there. Many people came in with a tax return that said they made 40k, so when BP made them an offer of say 50k, they countered with "well I really made 150k" and got mad at BP for not paying it to them
Man, I wish I could have been there.

I heard it was fun times. They went all over the media bashing BP but conveniently forgot to mention that they were evading 2/3 of their tax liability, if not more

You are dumb. Stop talking. Even if they get 1/6 of the money back, they will make money off it.
The crazy thing is they will continue to hound these people until they get the majority if not most of it back. They have the power to garnish wages, etc.
In the end, the people who double dipped and tried to get the handout are the problem. It looks and sounds like you are the type of scumbag who would try to take advantage of the government because they didn't take care of it on the front end and you feel that entitles you to lie, cheat, and steal.

No, I am not dumb. Acting as if this effort to pull back six million dollars is fruitful, is dumb.
This collection effort will be farmed out, and the government will wave the banner on some menial sum, most of which will not actually go back to the government. Net wash that will result in nothing positive.
If only the government policed the waste and excess in the defense industry with such fervor. If only the government held Barclays to this standard when they buttfricked America for fifty billion dollars in the deal of the century, all accomplished through manipulating similar systemic flaws.
The dumbfricks are the assholes that advocate stepping over hundred dollar bills to pick up quarters.

Many people asked to return money were deemed ineligible because their damaged properties were vacation houses or rental properties, not their primary residences. Others had double dipped into the aid pool, with more than one household member getting payments.
I see no problem in taking this money back.

Vacations houses and an annual gross income of $30000 or less do not go together.

Maybe we can use some superfunds to superreimburse superFEMA instead of using superfunds from superaverage Superamericans

FEMA has done this before. They did it post Katrina to my parents.
4 years after Katrina my parents get a letter from FEMA saying they were not eligible for benefits due to insufficient damage. Which is bullshite considering my folks lived in St Bernard and their house floated off the foundation.
Sure they had some insurance. I repeat "some". The FEMA funds were used to replace clothes and other daily required items.
They have appealed it 3 times and everytime FEMA said they were not eligible for the funds. Funny thing is we have talked to 5 neighbors who recieved the same funds and have not been asked to return the money.
My old man gets so pissed. He refuses to pay, he told the last guy he talked to at FEMA he'll give them their $2500 back in $5 increments after they spend $10000 in salary for employees who are working these cases.

I was in NY for Sandy. I know a lot of people down here try to minimize it, but it wasn't a joke. Widespread and long lasting power outages. Major flooding - not and long or as deep as in N.O. after Katrina, but serious flooding. Temps dropped to near freezing within a week. It's a bitch when it's hot after a hurricane, but 40 degrees is pretty fricked up too.
Last, but certainly not least, is the population of NYC and coastal NJ. WAAAAY more people were directly impacted by Sandy, than Katrina and Rita.

Well that seems reasonable

I'm sure it will cost 25 mil to get back the 6 mil they gave away.

Not exactly, and they are not going to go looking for them either. However there will be some suprises come April 15th of some year in the future. Here lately the Gov. has been witholding debts from benefit payments as well.
