I think they make sense for two reasons:

1) They allow for community amenities that the local government may not be able to provide, such as walking trails, pools, signage, common areas, police patrols, etc.

2) What one person does with their own property can affect others. Good people don't want to live next to trashballs, who park on their lawn, don't cut the grass, keep boats on the front lawn, etc.

The problem is when these groups go overboard, which happens roughly 100 percent of the time.

Basically this. Fortunately my HOA is relatively cheap and thus far hasn't gone overboard on anything, at least not toward me. I'm sure it's coming at some point.

Thoughts on Neighborhood Covenants/Housing Authorities
They are necessary, but oftentimes not run very well due to power-hungry resident board members. You do not want the alternative which is no covenants or restrictions.

We have them in our neighborhood and I appreciate them. No they aren't busybodies.

HOA's are perfect for authoritarian Yankee retirees who want to micromanage everyone's lives as if they're a dictator. Personally, I'm a bona fide member of the "Get the Hell off my Land Party."

Yeah, I would really hate to do with my property what I please.

I guess you shouldn't have agreed to that contract.

I've had one in place at all three of the places I've lived and the only time we had an issue, it ended up being a positive experience.

Lol, none of my parents/grandparents ever lived in an area with a covenant or HOA. Granted, my parents have always lived in the country with a 20 acre plot of land, but my grandmother had lived in a suburb since the 60s. My grandfather always parked his car in the grass to the right of the driveway.

In the 27 years I've been alive, that neighborhood has never looked trashy. Yes, some people took better care of their property than others, but I would love to live in that neighborhood if I moved back home.

This.

I'm the owner of a property that's subject to an HOA in Georgia, and I hear from the HOA rep at least once a year, claiming that my tenant left his trash can out too long. And the tenant denies he did it, so I ask the HOA rep for a date-stamped photograph of the alleged "violation" that she's never provided.
So this year she got smart and sent a violation notice because my lawn is thinning, with a blurry photo of a green lawn with no apparent problems. But I still had to pay for re-sodding to get the HOA off of me.

They don't like renters.

Oh, and I pay about $900 a year for the privilege.

What would you want to do with your property that would violate typical neighborhood covenants? You want to have an old washing machine in your front yard with a tree growing through it?

And you'd love to to allow your neighbors to do whatever to their property as they please.

That's where HOAs come in handy.

What did that portion of grass look like when the car wasn't there?

That's just one example of the many things that make HOAs come in handy, so people don't do shite like this.

I'll never live in any neighborhood without one. Poor people love to park junk cars in their yard.

After 40 years, there wasn't much grass, but I fail to see why that's so bothersome. If someone really gets angry over their neighbor's yard having a rectangular shaped patch of dirt, they have way too much time on their hands.

Because it looks like shite, that's a start.

Or they just have to see a shitty yard every single day right next to their house.

And that's just 1 thing, now when every neighbor is allowed to do their own shite, that's how you get neighborhoods that aren't nearly as nice as mine with an HOA.

I live in a HOA. I bought the house knowing it was HOA and knowing the reputations of HOAs. But it doesn't bother me. Bc I keep my property maintained. And the HOA makes sure everyone else does too.

My family in Nola loves to bash the concept of HOAs and how they have such glorious freedom to do whatever they want with their homes. That's cool, but then don't complain when a neighbor doesn't cut his grass or trim his trees or pick up his empty trash can.

Pretty sure a rectangle the size of a car on the left side of the driveway in no way encompasses an entire yard. That yard was beautiful. There were tons of trees on the property and my grandmother was big into gardening. She always had colorful plants lining the driveway and in the front/side of the house.

Oh yes, we can't have this in the United States of America

Trailer trash will live in trailer trash neighborhoods. Sure, some home owners do things that annoy you, but at the end of the day, what I am concerned with is my own little plot of land and how it looks. I do not care what my neighbors are doing unless they start bulldozing the driveway at 6:00 AM.

I live in one. I can see that they could have positive effects if they were enforced correctly. My biggest peeve with them is the selective enforcement of rules. Board members in mine are currently in violation of rules that they enforce on SOME of the other residents. WTF?

Probably wants to do some classy homemade additions to the front of the house. Something involving cinder blocks.
