As long as they're not overboard they can be very important for maintaining neighborhood appearances and property values. I've seen the consequences of not having them and it sucks.

Probably wants to do some classy homemade additions to the front of the house. Something involving cinder blocks.
Needs to make sure to abandon the project halfway thru. Nothing like a half-wall to lean scrap metal and old lumber against.

My biggest peeve with them is the selective enforcement of rules.

This is my #2

#1 is someone else's idea of what aesthetics is

Personally I think its ridiculous to buy a plot of land and then hand over your rights to someone else (while paying them ).

If you live in a nice neighborhood and care about it staying nice, as opposed to some asshat junking it up, they are a good thing.

Pretty sure a rectangle the size of a car on the left side of the driveway in no way encompasses an entire yard.
I didn't say it did. I said it looks like shite, because it does.

Oh yes, we can't have this in the United States of America

Yea, you're entirely missing the point here. When the way my neighbors take care and maintain their house affects the value of my house, I'm 100% ok with an HOA to regulate and act as insurance for having shitty neighbors.

quote:

Trailer trash will live in trailer trash neighborhoods
There are $500k and $1million homes that look like shite. You're being a bit naive if you think that only a trailer trash type neiborhood has neighbors who don't take care of their shite.

I do not care what my neighbors are doing unless they start bulldozing the driveway at 6:00 AM.
It affects my home value, I care. No clue why you wouldn't.

sounds like some busy-body retirees with nothing better to do. My folks used to have a retired state rep in their HOA that couldn't stop being in the middle of shitte if his life depended on it!

Some people's homes are on wheels and can just be moved away to a more desirable shady acres.

Without HOAs, one of those homes can be parked in your neighbor's driveway, and there's nothing you can do about it.

My neighbor actually said something to me about an ATV & trailer in the driveway for about a month after season ended. I pointed to all the damn boats sitting in ppl's driveways all over the 'hood and gave him a FO look. I was technically breaking the rules, but so was 100 other ppl around us.

FTR, this guy wears black knee socks & sandals when he SWEEPS is entire driveway EVERY day and then picks up the leaves and sticks with a dust pan and puts it in the trash. I hose mine off twice a year and blow half of it into his yard.

Plenty of municipalities have ordinances that address things like this. A lot of the stuff HOA's bitch about is often covered by code enforcement as well.

They don't like renters.

Stereotypes can be true in some contexts, and renters generally do not take care of a place as good as an owner does.

That's not always true. Some renters treat property much much better than owners. But it is still a stereotype

If HOAs are too overboard in enforcement... code enforcement is the exact opposite in many places.

You know, I live on a middle-class street with no HOA, and the craziest thing happens...

People take care of their yards for the most part and the street looks presentable, all without an authoritarian board telling us that we have to do it.

Even better, all the houses look different and everybody can do what they please.

It is wild!

It only takes 1. And before you move in and after you move in, you have no control over that one.

When I moved to Telluride, the first place I looked to buy had the HOA prez come for a visit.
Tells me the things that they didn't like. Charcoal grills was first. I told him to go frick himself.
I bought in an older neighborhood and life is good.
