It’s obvious he’s one of these weirdo am I being detained fricks. Officers should be trained by now to at least bring up this line of questioning. The minute he refused to give his name and asked coherent obstinate questions back to the officer it was clear what his MO was.

And some libraries you do have to get permission to record because there might be kids in there.

There is no accessible public space in the USA that requires permission to record in, hence the term public domain.

Where you dipshits come up with you homegrown exceptions boggles the mind.

This is stupid. Cops have enough to deal with much less a smart arse man Karen. All he had to do was show them identification and not be an a-hole.

Then he wouldn't get to make a bullshite video. He knew carrying multiple backpacks and wandering around the library filming the place in an age of mass shootings and bombings would provoke a response. He knew being curt with the librarian would up his intimidation level. The narrator of the video is a bullshitter. This guy was not looking for reception, etc. He was looking for a response to his purposefully provocative/menacing behavior.

When violent events occur and we hear that the perpetrator behaved in a suspicious manner, people respond with questions about why no one reported the behavior before hand. Those people are lambasted for their lack of awareness. Now, we have people in this thread suggesting this guy should have simply been ignored. They are either being dishonest for political points or clueless. Again, if this guy was Muslim the reactions would be far different.

While all that is true what is also true is the armed badged wearing individuals should have handled it better and that is on them, how in 2022 dumbass cops are still falling for this is unbelievable.

Honest question. What should they have done?

The second they determined there was no crime in progress told everyone thanks for their time, got back in their cars, and headed back to crispy creme or wherever the frick they came from.

Showing up and asking questions is their job, inventing crimes from thin air to arrest someone for is not.

I would expect they are about to learn this the hard way and a dipshit judge is about to learn he is not a law unto himself and the citizens of the parish will see taxes go up to cover the increase cost of insurance due to this while backpack man will be a bit wealthier, seems he was the only one with functioning brain cells in the building at the time.

Were they able to determine that? Surely he didn't let them look in his multiple backpacks, did he? Could they determine he wasn't scouting the place for future events?

Not the librarian who demonstrated situational awareness?

Thats not how things work, its not up to him to prove he will never commit a crime he either is or is not doing so.

What situational awareness? a man was in the library and had backpacks, what pissed her off is he did not knuckle under to her which is what kicked off her call to the police in the first place just as he knew it would when he blew her off.

He knew 100% he was walking into a situation with a bunch of ignorant hicks and played them like a fiddle from beginning to end.

Because there is no black and white law about it.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which includes Louisiana, has held that there is a First Amendment right to record, including the right to film and audio record the police, subject to reasonable time, place and manner restrictions.

The last sentence is key - and that’s what gives judges the ability to rule differently depending on the situation.

This guy is baiting people into calling the cops on him. Why not walk up to the library employees and explain what he’s doing?
Because he wanted YouTube content.

Think of it from the librarian's perspective, if she witnessed his behavior, didn't say anything, and an incident occurred, she'd be called an idiot. Some would say she was indirectly responsible.

This guy should not have gone to jail, but this is borderline play stupid games for me. I don't have any sympathy for him.

It’s obvious in this thread who has not worked in a public setting like a library.

I wouldn’t have called the cops on the guy, but I would’ve asked him a thousand times if he needed help and why he was pulling on locked doors.

I despise when cops go out of their way to create bad situations or escalate ones that could have ended peacefully, but screw this guy.
I wouldn’t care if he got the shite beaten out of him by the cops to teach him to stop messing with people for profit.

He wanted to go to jail and the parish is about to find out why, he set this up from the get go and controlled the whole thing due to his verbiage with his questions and statements all being pre planned to hit legal points.

He is about to be paid very well for his 30 days.

Cops have to stop taking the bait

A library does not get to restrict public video or photography ever other than some exception for old docs that can be damaged by flash and restrooms or the like.

They, just like I, can hang a sign claiming anything they so wish but it is not legal or binding.

If it is viewable from public space it may be recorded or photographed.

Mostly - it would depend on how the court ruled on the suit (if there was one). There have been different rulings in different places.

That's not what public domain means.
