that happened to me at Loyola-New Orleans in the late 1990s - they thought I was Hispanic bc I had placed in Spanish for state rally a few years in a row - but when I went to meet with them they realized I wasn’t Hispanic (which should’ve been easy by my name) and instead of a full scholarship, I got half - I didn’t go there anyway

I went to a private school and had 1 other classmate graduate with me.

I was runner up valedictorian.

No. I wouldn't bet that lower qualified black candidates are getting a free pass. The MITs get black and Hispanic applicants with extremely high SATs

Have you seen the average MCAT scores by race for admitted students? If black students can get into something as med school with lower scores, imagine how it is for undergrad.

the coalition for college success, or some organization with a name like that - does get first generation students into prestigious colleges, and also minorities - the student can’t be totally stupid, but they do not necessarily have to be high achievers

It's sink or swim. If you don't like underperforming compared to Asians, do something about it and work your arse off.

kids are all grown so I’ve been out of that for awhile, but when I was at LSU I was way behind all of the foreigners in my curriculum (CivE,) because they had taken all of the tough core courses in middle and high school, in La. those type of courses weren’t offered in public schools

They can use whatever criteria they want, everyone applying has damn near perfect grades and test scores. They want to know if you were president of the chess club.

Let me introduce to you Michael Wang. In 2012, Wang graduated from high school in the Bay Area. 4.67 gpa, aced ACT, 99 percentile SAT, on the school’s debate and speech team, founded…yes founded the school’s math club, played the piano and sang with the San Francisco Opera at Obama’s innauguration. Not good enough for Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc.

Grade inflation, the reduction in rigor of these standardized tests, people getting their kids special training/courses for said standardized tests, and a host of other things have honestly made these metrics awful at gauging student potential.

Hell 20+ years ago, we had a guy transfer from my high school our senior year. He went to another school in the school district (a regular one vs our magnet) and while he was in the bottom 20th percentile at our school going into our senior year, he graduated top 4 at the new school. These metrics are awful indicators of student quality now and are way worse than they used to be.

That said, there are plenty of strong minority students getting taken into these schools. They aren't taking a kid that is weak academically because they have enough strong applicants there to not have an issue.

There is definitely bias against non-minorities, don't get me wrong, but it is also way more people going to college and kids are being gifted everything, so its hard to see differences these days.

Have told this several times here. A nephew had perfect GPA and near perfect SAT. College of choice asked him to defer enrollment to summer because of quotas… he accepted another offer.

Dude walked out of college into a $140k job…

Colleges shooting themselves in the foot by passing over future donors to enroll students that likely will just transfer or dropout.

Colleges now claim to be “test optional”. Meaning, you don’t have to submit an ACT or SAT score “if you feel your merits are strong enough without the test”.

Meaning, if you’re a minority and have a good story about struggling in this systemic racist culture we live in, and you cannot get a good score on the ACT because it’s a racist test, you may still get accepted over a young adult who took the time to take the test.

NEVER say that your kid is Asian on any paperwork. Ever.

My Vietnamese co-worker puts down that his kid is a white or "other" race and is hispanic on every form that he has ever filled out for him.

Doubtful, who is going to enforce their biased admissions.

Now if the kid gets $100M in damages from each school and they tap their elite endowments it’s game on.

Though I understand the 1590 SAT score I no longer have a clue how 4.65 GPA compares anymore.

Wrong. They've already switched to subjective criteria. Like if they see an applicant's name is "wang" they are throwing it in the trash.

All they have to do is rank Asians lower on these subjective criteria like "character", "Trustworthiness", and "Bravery". Blacks will score the highest on these categories and Asians will score the lowest. It's that simple.
