Bingo. It's a big mis-conception that the baws have just because someone mentions New Orleans.
I will say, Caesar on Bonnabel is a pretty good set up for a family who isn't used to being in Nola and dealing with parking, logistics, etc.
Metairie parades other than that night are pathetic. The New Orleans parades are just so much better with more throws, better floats, better marching groups, and better crowds.

West of lakeside mall is basically all families. Uptown is certainly more fun & authentic but that area along veterans is more family friendly.

I can’t think of too many Mardi Gras spots more family friendly than st Stephens church.

Yeah get yourself a spot somewhere along the number streets along St. Charles. The crowds will be relatively light and the kids will be able to catch a good bit. It's the first Saturday so you will not have a bunch of touristas and the rougher element will be much further down near Lee Circle and even then they are not all that much of a problem on that weekend.

Caesar is still a good parade on the Saturday.
The Metairie route is changing this year, EXCEPT for Caesar, who will parade inbound on Veterans. As has been mentioned, the first half of the route is family friendly, as is Veterans between Causeway and the end.
Severn Avenue is a bit less savory, but by no means horrible. It is quite easy to get in and out of Lakeside for parking and onto the interstate or over the interstate at Causeway Boulevard.
There are restaurants all along the route, a few bars, cigar shops on or near Severn. We tend to buy coffee at Puccino's in Lakeside as their restroom is clean, but there are very clean portable toilets as well.
Get to some of the other businesses early enough and you can park in their parking lots and tailgate right at the sidewalk. Brooklyn Pizza is a good spot at least for the food.
