I like dogs but haven't really had one of my own as an adult

Anyway someone's dog ran away here in South TX and no one has claimed it. As of tomorrow if still not claimed it will be up for adoption.

I'm in between jobs right now so I have plenty of time to train it so that's no issue. Anything I need to know before I pull the trigger?

A couple pictures of the guy for your troubles

Adopting a puppy is great! Mine just turned two and I was lucky enough to have time off to train her as well, but make sure you've got some funds stashed away. They aren't cheap. Shots, food, toys...it all adds up. But I wouldnt trade any of it now that she's finally chilled out.

Looks like he has some golden lab in him, he should make for a smart and loyal dog. If he has lab in him he's going to want something to splash in (kiddie pool, at least).

Take him to a vet to make sure he has all his shots (and in off-chance there's a tracking chip) and to get him on a schedule for annual shots.

If you aren't going to breed him, snip those nads as soon as possible (neutering them before they've had a chance to mate seems to lessen the impact of a female in heat on them, neutering also often makes them less aggressive).

If he's high-energy look into some training classes to help him focus that energy.

If you are between jobs, now is not the time to be taking on more responsibility. What if your next great job offer asks you to go to training out of town for a month?

Awesome pup though.

that's a good looking pup, I'd have a hundred of them if I weren't gone so much, down to four now

Only thing I will say is my dog who was adopted is extremely clingy with me. I don't mind that but just something to keep in mind. He was very anxious when I left the first few weeks after getting him, so do shorter trips (5 minutes away, 10 minutes away, half hour away, hour away, half a day away) etc. knowing he may be whining when you leave. The goal is for him to realize you'll always come home

Often at night he wants to be in physical contact when I'm home. Not sleeping but on the couch etc. I don't mind if but someone who is more into their personal space may.

Looks like a good dog..Whatever you name him..make it a name you won't regret..
Back in the 70's my sister named her dog "stewmeat". The dog got out and she was calling the dog's name in the neighborhood. People thought she was touched..well they were right.
