Think you'd like to work for Amazon?

At Amazon, workers are encouraged to tear apart one another’s ideas in meetings, toil long and late (emails arrive past midnight, followed by text messages asking why they were not answered), and held to standards that the company boasts are “unreasonably high.” The internal phone directory instructs colleagues on how to send secret feedback to one another’s bosses. Employees say it is frequently used to sabotage others. (The tool offers sample texts, including this: “I felt concerned about his inflexibility and openly complaining about minor tasks.”)
Bo Olson was one of them. He lasted less than two years in a book marketing role and said that his enduring image was watching people weep in the office, a sight other workers described as well. “You walk out of a conference room and you’ll see a grown man covering his face,” he said. “Nearly every person I worked with, I saw cry at their desk.”
“I would see people practically combust.”
Liz Pearce, worked on Amazon’s wedding registry

Hmmm..... sounds kinda like my place of employment.

You could at least post the employee response, and the CEO's response, for a little balance.

Long version:
As I woke up ready to start the weekend (without the slightest inclination to work, I might add – much more on this later), I glanced at my iPhone to appease my Facebook addiction and see what my friends were up to. Much to my surprise, a New York Times article describing Amazon had polluted my feed.
Amazon is a big company, and gets referenced often. I’ve read many articles that describe us. Some are more accurate than others. Sadly, this isn't one of them. This particular article, has so many inaccuracies (some clearly deliberate), that, as an Amazonian, and a proud one at that, I feel compelled to respond.
To baseline, no one asked or expected me to do this. As I cracked open my laptop to write this article,...

Very long read. TL;DR version **:
Step 1: Have bias
Step 2: Find ex-employees with anecdotal stories that fit in with your bias
Step 3: Gather old stories and criticism while glossing over changes made to improve on that, and completely ignore that it's still significantly better than industry practice
Step 4: Take half-truths and spin spin spin!!
Step 5: Publish article

Here’s why I’m writing you. The NYT article prominently features anecdotes describing shockingly callous management practices, including people being treated without empathy while enduring family tragedies and serious health problems. The article doesn’t describe the Amazon I know or the caring Amazonians I work with every day. But if you know of any stories like those reported, I want you to escalate to HR. You can also email me directly at jeff@amazon.com. Even if it’s rare or isolated, our tolerance for any such lack of empathy needs to be zero.
The article goes further than reporting isolated anecdotes. It claims that our intentional approach is to create a soulless, dystopian workplace where no fun is had and no laughter heard. Again, I don’t recognize this Amazon and I very much hope you don’t, either. More broadly, I don’t think any company adopting the approach portrayed could survive, much less thrive, in today’s highly competitive tech hiring market. The people we hire here are the best of the best. You are recruited every day by other world-class companies, and you can work anywhere you want.
I strongly believe that anyone working in a company that really is like the one described in the NYT would be crazy to stay. I know I would leave such a company.
But hopefully, you don’t recognize the company described. Hopefully, you’re having fun working with a bunch of brilliant teammates, helping invent the future, and laughing along the way.
Thank you,
Jeff

I had a family member work at Amazon. At the very highest level, he reported directly to Jeff Bezos. It was a few years ago but NOTHING I read in that article reflects what he told me or what I saw on visits.
Let's all keep in mind how accurate that Rolling Stone story about the rape at the fraternity was last year. I can tell you this, with the lawyers and clout that Amazon possesses, I would bet money that this is pursued. Stand by for the fall out.
BTW, why the hell would the NYT go after Amazon like that? I guess journalism is truly dead.

It is funny that we keep seeing all these articles about how horrible Amazon treats its employees. You'd think if it were that bad, someone would come forward with some real evidence (emails, videos of incidents at the workplace, etc) that support what is being reported.

When did CAD703X start working for NYT? Sounds just like one of his Amazon rants.

Because Bezos owns WaPo. It's just the Times "hating" on a competitor.

I met someone who worked for Amazon at a bar once. She didn't tell us any crazy stories like this, but she did sleep with my friend

Well I guess we know what CAD703X does for a living now.

There have been a few horror stories posted on /r/cscareeradvice from both current and ex employees.

the headhunter currently window shopping for me around the IT job landscape has placed a few infrastructure engineers there.
She says once they pass a few interviews and their resume passes, they are given an enormous technical test/exam. They only hire if that person broke the previous test takers score record. So, the more people added to the team, the higher the score. The higher the score, the higher necessary entrance score.
It's competitive out of the gate there.

You're a day late and a dollar short on your response

Jeff Bezos is awesome in my book. Guy throws money into awesome projects to entertain and benefit more than just himself.

Pussies. And we thought it was just the younger generation.

At this point you could tell me Amazon beats their employees with a large stick, runs their fleet on kitten-based fuel, and ships every dollar I give them to North Korea...
I'm not giving up my Prime membership.

But that is the plan Jeff, and it's a good one.
For those unfamiliar with Amazon, those orange thingees are robots that bring items to humans...for now.
